Heyyy everyone. You might have heard (probably not) of a certain CONTEST going on in the world of animation/music/showbiiiz! Turns out the band radiohead is looking for an animated video for a song on their last album "In Rainbows". The album is already notable for being released on the web first, where the customer chose to pay what he wanted to pay, any price from zero to a number that is less than infinity.
They organized a contest with the website www.aniboom.com to decide who gets to design and create that videoclip theyre looking for.

http://www.aniboom.com/radiohead/

The contest:
Heres how it goes: At first, people send in storyboards and plans to show off their ideas. You can choose any of the songs on the album. A group of judges on aniboom ends up selecting 10 finalists taking into account the rating of their videos and their number of views. These 10 finalists then receive 1000$ to produce a 1-minute fully animated clip of their idea. Off the 1-minute clips submitted, the same group of judges select the five best, and send them to radiohead, who then choose the winner. The winner receives 10 000$ to produce the whole video (and also gets bragging rights for having made a video for the band).

The contest is under way right now, and the initial submission of storyboards ends on april 28th. As of the writing of this, 325 storyboards where submitted. Some are partly animated clips, others are regular storyboards, some simple have text that describe what will be seen on screen as the music plays...

Ive made my own entry on the contest, to the song "Bodysnatchers" and im pretty proud of it! (heh heh... frankie that attention whore...) see it here:

it was just submitted today. Took about 6 days of very intense work. Its sort of half a storyboard and half an animation, with some sort-of animated segments. All frames (about 380) are quickly drawn in photoshop with a graphic tablet and then animated in flash. Its probably the most intense work I ever done, by far, and the first time I did anything remotely big that wasn't pixel art (heh heh out of my eleme nt). I'm pretty proud of the result, even if some parts are a little stiff(but thats sort of understandable for a storyboard anyways)
I don't think I can like, actually win this thing, but maybe I could reach finalist.
I was pretty lucky too, because my animation teacher allowed me to just work on my contest entry instead of our regular end-of-semester project, and she would give a mark to the entry instead. It allowed me to go all out on the entry and not have to worry about these heavy school works at all. The final animation will prolly all be in vector art instead of these painted-like images.

But I'm starting to think It was a whole lot of work for nothing, seeing as it seems the top 10 animations are pretty much already set, with crazy amounts of views in the thousands, while I'm still painfully reaching 30 views... And as they're the most popular videos, they get even more exposition, and so goes some sort of vicious circle of popularity... But hey, who knows.

So!
Roam the entries list and post about videos you particularly like! Also plz... vote for min.e.....
Also, if you have ideas of your own, you still have the time to put them into film and submit them, it all ends on the 28th remember!

Oh and I think I saw an entry by Sredni Vashtar there! But as aniboom doesn't support searching for names apparently, I cant find it back. Sredni, whert art thou? His entry was very nice, about a little girl that vomits moths. Or is it by that other Sredni Vashtar. It got me wondering, are there any other GWers who participated? If so, post links to your entries there!

(Also I hear adult swim had advertisements for the contest, which is sort of cool, I didn't thought it was actually something that went out of the interenets at all (Im not American though so I don't have cartoon network)

(also I thought of posting it in general because well, its a contest, its news... its about music... its videos... its... everyth ing... (also I want to get views so I can win))

I absolutely love that one. The animation and effects are brilliant, especially for a storyboard.

Man Psychoskull

other than the creatures looking a little like Invader Zim that video is brilliant - I love the fucking zoom-in you do at 2:45 or 2:54 or wherever I'm not sure of the exact time so I'm just making up numbers

Yes thats it. I wonder though, is it our very own Sredni Vashtar.

Also invader zim, for the bright eyes? I didn't have anything specific in mind, I just wanted them to be frail-looking and creepy, but without being like, vampires or zombies or something similar. The eyes are like, red lights so i could draw some face detail around them when they're at a dark spot (like at the very end when the wave of goo is about to sweep, and for a frame it hides the light, and during that frame they're only lit by their eyes.

Psychoskull, that was fantastic. I loved that one overhead shot where the guy is running through the crowd to read the guy about to be consumed. Good job man.

Thanks! Yes there is a "top rated" section. Mine is very far down, at the sixth page. people don't really view it a lot because well, its lost in a sea of 300+ submissions, and only the most popular ones get viewed a lot. I'm sure most people who see it would love it, but if they don't see it in the first place... It turns into kinda a popularity contest which sucks a lot. They should have taken judges instead, but 300+ entries is way too much work for judges I guess.
My rank is like, 220th/340 (40 per page, I'm at about half of the sixth page)

http://www.aniboom.com/category/Radiohead/6/TopRated/All

Id need to find some way of getting it viewed by lots of people. I only showed it here and on pixeljoint, and to a couple friends...

If you have friends in SA with a high post count, you should ask one of them to post it.

Im not sure who I could ask for that, or if its a good idea...
Would it really mean a lot of views? That'd be nice because its what I need right now! More views mean it appears more often in the "community favorites" list so people who can vote have a better chance of seeing it, and I'm pretty sure they'll rate it pretty good. Only registered people can vote, so I cant really assume people from outside aniboom will register an account just to vote for my vid, but views alone can be a lot of help.
Well if anyone here could try to spread it around like on SA, he'd be my... my hero...

Submit your video to digg.com.

You never know, even if it doesn't hit front page (which I'd probably say is unlikely) it'll get you a few more views for free.

EDIT: Forgot to say, love your video - it's really awesome.

Oh forgot to say, for some reason I seem to be going up the ranks now, I was at the 7th page in the rankings before, now im at the fourth! Maybe its because I changed my entry's icon to something with more impact, a brightly colored face. Also I submitted a second, unrelated animation in the hopes that some people might see the second, and like be curious about my other stuff and end up checking out my contest entry. Dunno if itll work.
http://www.aniboom.com/Player.aspx?v=203055  <--- here it is. Its got a bug in it though, I dont know what causes it. Four frames that lag like half a second for some reason. The strategy isn't working much yet though, the anim got viewed like 7 times.... Im also trying to be more active in the aniboom community itself, but I don't know if its wasted time...

Also Sredni didn't answer yet, is he even around anymore?
