Thrice used to be an emo/post-hardcore/whatever band. Their new stuff is actually quite different though.
They have basically been writing an album split into four volumes consisting of water, fire, earth and air. Each ep has a different sound. Fire, is raunchy, raw hardcore stuff. Water has very watery sounds and beats. Air has very breathy vocals etc. Earth is all recorded with acoustic instruments and feels very 'earthy'.
They all have their merit, but you should seriously check out the Earth ep. I don't really like their other stuff that much, but that ep is really great.
http://www.myspace.com/thricescroll down and listen to 'dig my own grave' and 'The lion and the wolf'. They are probably my favourite. You can usually tell which songs belong to which volumes based on their song titles. There is usually a reference to the element they are refering to in the song title.
I like the recording style on Earth aswell. It's got a very live vibe to it. For instance you can hear chairs creeking in some of the songs etc.
