Stop Virgin NOW.

Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...

The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.

This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.

Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.

But we can stop it.

If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.

Speak out in any way you can and spread the word.

misleading topic titles are funny.

Anyways, this is bullshit.  but how exactly can virgin actually pull this off.  I go through Roadrunner internet, so I don't reallly see how they could effectively limit other ISP's internet speed.

The answers probably simple and I'm overthinking or something stupid like that.

They associating with other big companies. The question is, how can't they pull this off? There's no company or corporation protecting the Internet!

What advantage would that give them over an ISP that doesn't limit access and put sites in a 'slow lane'?

If one company pulls it off... others are soon to follow.

They'd still end up getting more money because their business "friends" would be the ones with fast speeds. So basically companies will be willing to pay to become their friends, and get that ultra cool fast service for potential customers.

Isn't this a governmental issue (i.e. ofcom) rather than something that can be just decided by a company?>

it appears you do not understand anything so here i'll help you out

this has come about with virgin mainly because of bbc iplayer, a new service that lets anyone in the UK watch lots of BBC tv shows for free online. the popularity is incredible and it's really straining the ISPs lines.

because it's causing problems, virgin want to put all that traffic into 'low priority' mode so that all the other stuff their customers use isn't affected. of course, if the BBC were willing to pay virgin, they would keep them in normal priority.

this doesn't affect anyone not using virgin. it doesn't limit anyone's speed except traffic from limited sites to virgin customers.

this is armchair activism at its finest, by the way

ISPs can do whatever they like with their network.

However, lots of ISPs have been wanting to do this but have been afraid of losing customers. Now that Virgin have then other ISPs will follow the 'trend' and start doing it too.

I thought you lost your virginity and were leaving the Internet because you suddenly became very cool for losing your virginity and that only uncool people use the internets and ARGRHRHHUIEHUEH22982E29

Also I don't think Virgin is capable of doing that

Someone rename the topic to something hilarious and witty so I can chuckle and then close Firefox and forget GW even exists

Also are there any benefits to the average user that can come of this?

Maybe I'm just incredibly naive about business matters and stuff (in fact, I'm fairly certain I am) but I think the quote from BT on the link you posted says it all: "We welcome all the Virgin customers who left because of the net neutrality issue and offer 'neutral' bandwidth." So in other words, they're banking on the idea that the Virgin thing will be a massive flop as all it's users jump ship... And there seems to be a lot of competition among ISPs, so if Virgin does something unpopular then it's a fair chance that everyone else will swing the other way in the hopes of attracting the 'pissed off ex-Virgin users' market. So I guess it all just depends on how much money Virgin end up making off of it versus the amount of people who switch ISPs.

Comcast is also a huge fan of doing away with net neutrality as well. They are in the habit of throttling torrents and stuff.

Luckily I just get some shitty local internet (which isn't so shitty, mind you!).

Yeah yeah net neutrality whatever.

I think the issue would be better solved by not granting monopolies to utilities in the first place, rather than implementing more regulations.

Well we're moving house in July so I'll change to a more liberal sounding ISP then and virgin can go fuck themselves.

But shit... I rode out living with dialup until a few months ago... I'll survive.
