Between the Buried and Me - Between the Buried and Me

Before I go any further, I'd like to state that this is all my opinion, and mine alone.

As a fan of Between The Buried and Me, I can say that their self-titled debut was a very raw and powerful album that is still a favorite among many metalcore fans. Why am I talking about this album, especially since they released their newest album Colors not to long ago? Because in my opinion it is just as important as Colors and any other album Between the Buried and Me has released. Its fast paced metalcore dominance and melodic passages became the standard of which Between the Buried and Me lives up to (beautifully) and for which they are known for.

The Track Listing is as Follows
1. More of Myself to Kill - 6'48"
2. Arsonist - 4'50"
3. Aspirations - 5'46"
4. What Have We Become - 5'07"
5. Fire for A Dry Mouth - 6'05"
6. Naked by Computer - 5'34"
7. Use of A Weapon - 4'51"
8. Shevanel Cut A Flip - 9'27"

Band Line-Up (at time of album)
    * Tommy Rogers - Vocals/Keyboards
    * Paul Waggoner - Lead/Rhythm Guitar
    * Nick Fletcher - Rhythm Guitar
    * Will Goodyear - Drums/Percussion
    * Jason King - Bass guitar

Since this is Between the Buried and Me's first full-length release, its not as "polished" as their future releases, but that's what makes this album unique from the rest in my opinion. Everything from the guitar tone to the vocals just feels very raw. At some points in the album it feels like they just took live recordings of the songs and just slapped them in there. A very noticeable difference in terms of sound is Tommy's (Vocalist) voice. While many are used to his now more controlled screaming, his vocals in this album were harsh and somewhat raspy. Another nightclub difference was that a majority of the clean vocals were done by Will Goodyear. The instruments themselves sounded more straight-forward and less like the "wall of sound" that the band has adapted in their current releases.

Alot of the lyrics on this album dealt with living in general. About giving up on dreams, about not furthering yourself, and about the beliefs of the bands. Songs like Asprations and More of Myself to Kill deal with living and about changing one's own life. The Song Arsonist talks about WBC (Westboro Baptist Church) and the murder of Mathew Sheppard.

So why listen to Between the Buried and Me's self-titled album or even talk about it? Because its in many ways its almost a completely alien album compared to their other releases, but still has the sound Between the Buried and Me has been known for. While being their most metalcore sounding album, it still has those jazzy passages and soft melodic interludes that much of the Between the Buried and Me fan base has come to know and love. Its a great album to listen to and is just as good as any other release this band has made. If your in for a good metalcore album with some great energy and progressive elements that weren't common in the genre at the time, check out Between the Buried and Me - Between the Buried and me. Its a great album and one of my personal favorites.

Wow I didnt realize the church was that extreme huh, that song actually has alot more relevance when you read about the stuff they do like protesting at funerals. And that church is registered as a hate group woah.

I'll definately check that album out especially since it sounds as if its not as smoothly produced as Colours.

So, this is who you wanted to make a topic dedicated to? Sure, they are one the greatest, and most technical Metalcore bands to this day, but I don't think I could muster up enough to dedicate a topic to them, especially not their s/t album.

I am not going to bash their s/t because Aspirations is my favorite BTBAM song, but Alaska is a far more superior album, it is everything that metalcore should be but better.

I would also like to state Anatomy Of was the most pointless thing anybody has ever done (other than Fearless Records: Punk Goes Crunk)

EDIT: by the way, BTBAM is the most boring live act EVER, I literally almost fell asleep watching them, they have no emotions on stage.

If colors is the only BTBAM album you've heard, this will definitely seem waaaayyyyy more raw. It really shows off alot of their earlier roots in the NC scene.

Well, I've seen alot of talk on here about colors and alaska (which your right on, I consider it BTBAM's best.) the topic wasn't dedicated to the band as much as it was dedicated to the actual album. The reason I think their S/t was so important was because it really shows just how they started out (obviously) but it also gives a much more broader background on the band. Imo the thing I appreciate the most about this band is that Although they still maintain the "BTBAM sound", none of their albums can really be called alike. There just so different from each other in many ways. Also, like I told Afura, I didn't really think this was Totw material, which is why I wanted to make it as a separate topic.

EDIT: I saw them on little way after the released colors. They seemed really active to me. I use to not want to go to BTBAM shows just because Paul would just stand there, but when I saw them, they were pretty active, maybe not like DEP crazy active, but I don't think any of them were statues, except for Dusty, but he seemed really bummed out, and his guitar was having problems. But yeah, I remember watching a selkies vid and their were just standing there, although I've heard they've gotten better at putting on a show.

I saw them around the time Colors came out, and wow it was such a borefest, both guitarists just stood there shredding away on their guitars, and the bassist was headbangin', the singer is the most active member out of the whole group.

there aren't many groups that put on shows like DEP haha, I've seen them too, and wow I was left in awe. (other notable live acts: old Tera Melos, Burden of A Day, GWAR, Every Time I Die)

Yeah, but then again, my eyes were focused on the guitar the whole time, so I dunno, I guess they have good and bad nights, maybe I just got lucky or something. HORSE put on a pretty awesome show, I may not like them but they put on a hell of a show.

I saw BTBAM live and it was the most fantastic show imo (not EVER but i mean it was good!).  I really dug it and was impressed by how fucking ridiculous tight they are live.  Its like the album but RIGHT IN YOUR FACE and just highly awesome.

I really dont get how you almost fell asleep watching them.

I want to see bands getting into their music, and stuff, not just standing there like robots chugging away on their guitars. I've been to enough concerts since theirs to forgive them for their lack of passion.

idk, I dont know if them not running all over the place is a lack of passion.  I think maybe you are looking for the wrong passion indicators here!
or maybe passion is just a bad term to use.

yeah, I think passion was the wrong word too haha.

but, I am not impressed by them live at all is what I want to say. if they could play the same music while moving, and jumping in the crowd, and stuff, I would be impressed.

for example:  Thomas Erak of The Fall of Troy, he plays guitar, screams, and jumps all over the place without missing a beat, and he always impresses me live.

Well, I mean, sometimes I do feel they're live presence is stale at times. I mean, I would consider this kinda boring, but this pretty awesome. Again, maybe not like running over people's heads, but still pretty awesome.

EDIT: Thomas Erak is pretty crazy, Although I wouldn't consider him BTBAM technical, the can shred no doubt. Insane dude.

Shit, the first one was suppose to be them playing Alaska Live. Fuck man, I still can't get over that DEP vid. If I could go back in time and magically place myself at any live show, it would ATD-I playing cosmonaut at London, but that DEP show would definitely be real fucking close.

The chariots vocals were pretty weak imo.

Man I sound like a faggot but I hate how fans of heaps of these bands are fucking like 14 it's not right seeing a BTBAM moshpit full of schoolkids.

BTBAM and The Black Dahlia murder (best band ever) are about as far as I can get into metacore/screamo whateve, each to his own though obviously but some of this stuff kinda just seems like christian metal to me and I'd rather have The Crown singing about being grim.

yeah i was thinking about that when i was watching the video.  i mean like how it would be to be in a metal band playing to those kinds of aggressive crowds ALL THE TIME (idk if i could make metal into a musical career just cause the straight up craziness all the time wouldnt really feel true but thats a tangent).  But yeah they are a sorta arty metal band imo and its pretty terrible that the majority of their fans are 5 year olds or w/e who dont really get it.

Yeah, they have SOME cool lyrics here and there, but not many.  Their more recent stuff is better than the lyrics he posted up at the top. they arent really the focus or a particular strong point anyway so i dont pay much attention.

why are they different?  I do not even know how you can ask that question!  I mean have you heard most other metalcore and then heard btbam?  The only album that question is justifiable on is maybe their eponymous, but everything after (particularly Alaska and Colors) is waaaaaaaay dif than other metalcore.

why are they good?  Its WHAT they are playing man, and how well put together and interesting and even innovative their albums are.  They write some reeeeeally good shit.
