we all know that there has been a lot of bullshit going on in the democratic primary this year. one of the biggest examples of this is the media circus last month revolving around obama's pastor, rev. wright. well, we thought it would all end after obama gave that speech in philly saying he would give wright the benefit of the doubt, but guess what it didn't.

recently, wright has made some tv appearances, and spoken at the naacp and press club conferences. on those occasions, he has given speeches defending his positions and sermons, and chastising the media for their lack of knowledge about the bible and the history of black churches.

in response to this, obama called a press conference where he started talkin mess about rev. wright. (see the article for his comments)

this is the article

here's the transcript of the address rev. wright gave to the naacp. it's really long but it's worth reading if you don't want to watch the video

yeah, since this whole thing started, i have really agreed with the things i've heard wright say. i was disappointed when obama first distanced himself from wright, but this is mega lame. if anything, obama should be scolding the media for their ignorance of anything below a superficial level. what is really distressing, is that this is a perfect example of people pushing away things they don't want to hear. the media and the government didn't want to hear what wright was saying, so they bastardized his message and demonized him. like i said, i'm disappointed in obama for siding with the pundits and not his faith.

what are your thoughts on the matter

wright has done more to destroy barack obama than any republican, no shit he's going to push him away as far as possible.

this is how politics works.

it's a little disheartening to see, but understandable!

I supported rev wright to people pretty much forever before this, however it is clearly evident that Wright is now just trying to destroy the Obama campaign.

Maybe I've missed something, and I wouldn't be surprised because I haven't paid the most attention to the American primaries, but did Wright even say anything racist?  From what I've seen, none of it was very offensive to white folk at all - stuff only straight white guys who have never felt an ounce of adversity towards them for simply /being/ would be bothered by.  Could someone whip up text of the 'sermons' the American media is calling racist?

I agree that he had to distance himself from Wright and denounce him, and it is too bad Wright said this to the media, he has to realise there's more at stake than /his/ reputation.

???

how the hell is wright trying to destroy obama's campaign?

wright is speaking the truths that obama SHOULD be speaking. it's the public portrayal of wright that is hurting obama's campaign. wright is attempting to give people his message, and obama should be supporting that.

what are you retarded

do you live in some sort of buble world or something

jeremiah wright isn't an idiot, he knows doing this will hurt obama, he knows all that would be gained from this was attention.

if you can't see that he just doesn't give a shit what happens to the obama campaign then you must be stupid or something

Either Wright is really stupid, or he has some other incentive for doing it. I don't understand what that incentive would be though, other than his devotion to the lord jesus christ our lord our savior.

I don't blame Obama at all for distancing himself; changing the country and getting that nomination is an infinitely more important task than pointlessly staying loyal to a faith. What would be the reason for that? The economy sucks, healthcare sucks, people are dying in Iraq, include whatever else one might think is a problem for the country, but risking your nomination because of a reckless stomp-and-shout pastor? Please.

there is one thing i heard wright has said that obama should definitely distance himself from. that thing about how he thinks the us government created AIDS or helped spread it to kill black people. this is what he said, right? i might be off slightly but that is such an outlandish claim and it makes it so easy to attribute everything else he says to WHAT A LOON.

the majority of the "hate speech" shit isn't hate speech at all, but he's saying it in a really provocative way which if he wasn't such an asshole he wouldn't do right now because it hurts obama's campaign so much. not this reverend, the one who obama has twenty years of history and friendship with, and not when he was on the brink of winning the democratic nomination. actually now that i've said that, maybe he has been saying these things forever and the media only picked up on it last month.

his continued presence is only giving the media an excuse to drag obama's name through the gutter.

it is a shame, the whole thing. cos while yeah he's kind of a prick, and he has said some pretty wild stuff which i would be shocked to learn was true, most of what he is saying is pretty much on the money. i mean are people seriously getting in a tizzy over his claim that america is run by rich white people? it's just the way he is saying it, and the timing of it. and when you are up against shit like FOX news, these are things you have to be careful about because they have no dignity and do not give a damn

If you could see my face, you would see a look of shock at hearing this news that "Politician makes promise, doesn't deliver." (Although I see why you might be upset by this, because Obama was supposed to be the honest, down-to-earth one, but it turns out he's full of as much crap as the rest)

That's dangerous road. You're saying it's ok to sell out to win an election. (Replace faith with campaign promises)

I think there is a distinct difference between having a faith, and being mindlessly loyal to those who propagate it.

yeah basically I do not care what spin the obama camp puts on it, this was clearly politically motivated.

I don't care that much, I just file it under yet another example of America being kind of bad!

the fact that he has to disown his pastor.

John McCain associates with guys saying 9/11 IS AMERICA'S FAULT and HURRICANE KATRINA IS GOD'S WRATH but he doesn't get heat!

oh yeah. i have always wondered why in america it is perfectly acceptable to call yourself CONSERVATIVE, however calling yourself LIBERAL is almost as bad as calling yourself GAY or something. there is a pretty inherent bias towards anything on the left, be it crazy pastors or politicians!

I'm glad he finally distanced himself from this nutjob.  I don't think it was just politically motivated move, but also personally motivated as well.  As for McCain and his bastard priests, I'm sure the DNC will take care of them in the general election if the nomination isn't stolen from Obama.

I wonder if Bush got any crap for his connections with Ted Haggard when Ted had his little intimate liaison with the male prostitute.

goddammit I've been trying to cut down on my VAST EDUCATION posts (heh...im so great with my worthless degree) but pick up a book called Talking Right, by Geoffrey Nunberg. it's about how the right wing has essentially coopted all of semantics and made VALUES into a conservative phrase and liberal into a dirty word.

Obama was VERY respectable to Wright about the "come to roost" speech, which was somewhat offensive. But now that the pastor has made these BLATANTLY offensive comments, he can't help but to distance himself from what he strongly disagrees with.

I think it's horrible this is an issue in the first place. Hillary lies about sniper fire and knowing Peter Paul,  and even has a lawsuit against her for campaign fraud, but someone NOT Obama makes racy comments, and suddenly Obama's campaign is "on the line"?
