its a free download off of their site

so, ill be the first to say im a little disappointed. they boasted how this was going into a new direction and i feel like its the same thing over again. the lyrics are incredibly weak, the guitar sounds horrible in the song, the layered vocals are kind of stupid.  it reminds me of a maroon five song.  im still looking forward to the album, there is bound to be one or two jems. though i dont think this is the masterpiece everyone has been hoping for - nothing new, radio friendly, market pleaser.

Nobody REALLY likes them, but they usually have a couple of alright songs to pass the time.

I'm actually a pretty big coldplay fan. This new song is not bad and is probably something that will grow on me. I'm not keen on the sound of the vocals though. It sounds like they were recorded in a bathroom...

i am listening as i type.

First off, I like Cold Play.  I think they have a few really cool songs-- IE a rush of blood to the head, god put a smile on your face, clocks, yellow, idk what else off the top.
And nah, this sounds fairly different than other cold play, actually.  I wouldn't call it an ENTIRELY NEW direction but it is definitely different than their older material.

Also, weak lyrics?

I don't know if I'd call them deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep etc, but definitely not weak per se.

Overall verdict is that its a decent song and definitely holds up to the singers claim that it is a new direction for the band.

Lyndon I agree with you. :-)

I also agree with Couch whole-heartedly. Maybe the lryics aren't the DEEPEST of all time, but music these days (Alternative Rock especially) is extremely shallow; mostly about how much they hate the world; Alternative Rock/Rap is probably just as bad as Country music in 2008 so far.

So comparitively speaking, I agree with Couch completly. Coldplay creates more melodic, beautiful music. It takes a heart or a musician/composers ear to really enjoy a lot of the stuff they have created over the past 5 years.

Most people here, though, take note hate Coldplay. So I will be probably the third and last person to actually write something positive within this topic.

It doesn't sound all that similar to other Coldplay songs in my opinion. I mean it's not completely new direction but it's definitely at least somewhat fresh. The end is more typical Coldplay though.

And even though I haven't listened to them in a while, I also like Coldplay and I have been waiting for their new album. They aren't fantastic or anything but they make good melodic music.

I like it. I think it sounds at least a little bit unlike their other stuff, and I like the "rough(?)" feeling to it? I dunno, I dig it.

I like it.

But is this the "masterpiece" they were talking about? I hope not.

I liked it, just kind of repetitive for a so-called masterpiece I think.

Did they totally rip of Kraftwerk's song Computer Love with their song Talk or am I missing something?

I like Coldplay a lot but in my opinion every album of theirs after their first has been a little bit worse than the previous one but I still think that they are a consistently good band.  I haven't heard this single yet (can't download right now at work) but I'm confident that I'll buy their new album pretty much day one.

When I am driving along in my hearse I listen to coldplay. Seriously, melancholic goodness - yes. I don't understand why the pop masses love it so much though.

Also digging Viva La Vida, the title track. Just dropped on iTunes I think and also pretty easy to get elsewhere. Nice strings, sounds pretty happy, really digging it.

Yeah, I quite like this track. He switched up his singing a bit and it's quite happy and 'hopeful'. The strings get pretty awesome as it goes on. I think it drags a bit at the end but it's a nice track all around.

I was pretty keen for Violet Hill due to the Brian Eno thing. I think it's a good track but definitely not a masterpiece. I don't think it sounds too poppy, people seem to have a problem with that. Not enough to drag it down in my eyes. It's a shame though, I like the track but I was hoping with Eno they'd do something really special :(.

well, i've heard the album, and personally I think it's fantastic. I really love the instrumental work. Yes, Lost!, Strawberry Swing, and Lovers in Japan are all some of my favorites, but really I love all of it. Anyone else listened to it, yet?

Liking Viva La Vida a lot so far, actually!

It has to be the most diverse Coldplay album yet, and I think it's pretty different from their previous albums. There is more variety in songs and instrumental parts are more dominant than before, plus their sound has definitely evolved since X&Y. Yes is probably the best Coldplay song I have heard. The intro sounds a lot like something Andrew Bird could do and the strings are very well used. Around 4 minutes it starts to sound like some Oceansize song for a moment until it becomes all shoegazy like Blonde Redhead or something. So far my other favorite songs are Lost!, Viva La Vida, Violet Hill and Life In Technicolor, which is an awesome intro by the way.

I've listened to the new album a couple times already and so far I really like it.

I really like the greater emphasis on strings on the album, both guitar and the addition of a lot of violin. The violin part in 'Yes' is awesome. I also like how they seem to be less afraid of pure instrumental parts, with Martin's voice being downplayed in some of the tracks.

My favorite tracks right now:
Life in Technicolor
Cemeteries of London
Yes
Viva La Vida
Violet Hill
Lovers in Japan

A definite improvement over X&Y which seemed to be a little 'spacey'. Also, in Talk they did sample that Kraftwerk songs, not exactly 'ripping off'.
