Hello there.

Just the other day I went to see Semi-Pro with my gf and I had warned her beforehand but I had no idea it was going to be so shitty, so just a quick heads up Its not a good movie dont see it unless you though blades of glory was H I L A R I O U S

ANYWAY whilst I was at this movie I noticed it had a pretty funky soundtrack and even though some of it is ridiculously cheesy I digged some of the grooves!
I like classic funky stuff like this song:

So if you have any cool funk stuff you wanna recommend me then be my guest!

Oh yeah! Funk! :D

I LOVE funk, its fucking awesome.
Although I don't really kno that much funky stuff since I started listening to it recently as well, I can recomend you specially the following bands (oh and btw, specially their 60-70 stuff):

Tower of Power:
Absolute awesomeness. Just listen to Squib Cakes and you'll get your mind blown away by some of the most catchy brass passages (and the guitar solo is also rle cool). I think they don't need a lot of presentation, since as soon as you listen to them, u'll understand what they're about. I must alert you that their stuff towards the 80s was quite crap just as almost every other funk band that tried to remain in the charts during the 80s.
Albums from these guys I'd recomend are:

- Tower of Power: The third one. Simply good... I mean what else can I say? a good combination of good riffs and catchy songs. And also very kindda soul/funk which in my oppinion is better than the more popular kind of dance/funk

- Back to Oakland: Their fourth one. A bit different from the last one in some respects but nevertheless awesome. I repeat that Squib Cakes is one of the best songs ever.

The albums before these 2 are also of very good quality.

Kool & the Gang:
A bit more inclined towards the dance funk area and still awesome. Some of their songs are rle famous like Hollywood Swingin'. In my oppinion some of their songs have the best funk brass passages ever writen... Rle skilled brass players.
I can't rle think of any albums cus to tell u the truth I don't have any by them; just a best hits one. But amongst the songs I rle like are for example: NT, Love the Life you Live and Open Sesamme.

And... well, those two are my favourites at the moment but there are SOO many good Funk bands that I'd recomend, for example: Funkadelic, Sly and the family Stone, James Brown, etc...
So yeah, hope that helps :)... Although that's just counting the 60-70s funk, cus then there's modern funk, and latin funk which are fucking awesome as well, but those bands listed before are kindda an introduction :D.

Funkadelic, man.

check out Free Your Mind... And Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain, Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, and One Nation Under A Groove.

also RHCP, James Brown, etc, but you've probably heard them.

Funk is awesome but, I could never get into any funk besides Funkadelic and Parliament because nothing else really lives up to those two. They're the best. Maggot Brain is an incredible album, and even if every song between Maggot Brain and Wars of Armageddon were garbage those two would redeem they whole album. But everything in between is great. It's an excellent funky sandwich. Hardcore Jones and Lets Take It To the Stage are also really great, and Standing of the Verge of Getting It On definitely needs to be mentioned too. Parliament doesn't have as much variety as Funkadelic but everything I've heard by them is pretty solid. Mothership Connection is probably my favorite though.

honestly when people tell me Funkadelic is funk.. I am actually confused. Where's the funk? Free your Mind and Maggot Brain aren't funk. Some of the songs are gospel or R&B, others are plain rock. I can hear a little funk sometimes but it doesn't seem to be so continuously strong in their albums.
Of course, One Nation Under A Groove is groovy and funky as fuck but yeah, I mostly listen to Free you Mind and Maggot Brain.

Funk bands are Ohio Brothers and The Meters

Funk rock are RHCP and Gang of Four.

I'd dare say Bad Brains are hardcore funk sometimes.

DJ soup listen to parliament albums which are the other half of funkadelic. Funkadelic is more psychedelic rock with funk influence where parliament is more straight up horn section funk

Curtis Mayfield! Just check out 'Superfly' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSYnn5B0C68&feature=related ) or 'Move On Up' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_8IA2Ty7ck ).
Also, War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG6PAhbDq2g) and ESPECIALLY Dennis Coffney: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei7qd9pQHZk&feature=related .
And if you're looking for some modern stuff, Fujiya & Miyagi do a kind of krautrock-funk thing that's pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMBndXAaPrw .

Is Prince considered funk? Some of his stuff sounds pretty funky even though I hardly listen to him anymore.

And I'm not sure if this is considered funk (rap?) either, but I love this song.
