I'm sure most of you have heard of the cyclone that has killed approximately 100,000 people in the South Asian nation of Myanmar.

Here is an article I just read about the experiences of CNN reporter Dan Rivers in Myanmar. It's really mind-blowing how much the militaristic government is trying to keep foreigners and foreign aid out - it's reminiscent of Rwanda, except the tragedy we're talking about is a natural disaster that obviously isn't the fault of the government!

In my opinion, these are the type of reports that deserve the Pulitzer: getting the news scoop in the face of danger and threats (unless he's dramatizing the whole thing).

Feel free to talk about other things pertaining to the situation in Myanmar, not just this article!

This happened almost a week ago and I had no idea it happened and I don't know what to say, but if their government doesn't want "foreign aid" nobody can force them, right? I hope they change their minds.

Apparently no one cares about this!!! j;lasjdaiweoeruiergan;dfva'w[eiorh

or perhaps 95% of you saw the word "Myanmar" and had absolutely no clue what it meant/was and didn't click on it.... I have included the more common words "Cyclone" and "in" and "Burma" in the topic title in hopes of appealing to the developing vocabularies of our 13-year-olds.

it's not that i don't care, i've been following the story on the news for a week or so. it's that i really don't have anything to say on it, other than the obvious. it's sad, crazy and abhorrent that the government is denying aid being sent from countries it doesn't like. maybe it's got valid reasons for being suspicious of the US or UK, but at times like this i think they should weigh their suspicions up with the possible costs, and the inevitable tragedies that are gonna occur if the aid doesn't get there.

Yeah, I would reply in this topic with my thoughts on it if it weren't so difficult to even appreciate the sheer scale of the tragedy. I don't know. I guess it's just difficult to put into words right now because I don't even realize how large a disaster this is, despite having read the numbers and the details.

The burmese government are basically total cunts (remember that crackdown?) so they're just excessively paranoid now, and it's disgusting as it's at the expense of it's people.

Agreed.  They only allowed one fucking plane from the US to drop off food supplies and the government took control them the second they were on the ground.

Absolutely terrible event... Even worse is, as mentioned, the lack or response to it.

Good thing John Rambo is in Burma...

I want to jump on the "The goverment are assholes" train, but I can't do that with out understanding Burma's history. I too would be very carefull in accepting help from any other country, as history has showed us, no one does anything for free, no matter what they say.

Maybe the goverment was slighted before in the past by another country and took that to heart, or maybe it's a matter of pride that the world is telling them that they can't handle their own country. I mean that is a pretty big slap to the face, no matter how you say it.

Bottom line is, I don't understand the history of the country so I can't say much other than they have to have a reason for being dicks about it, if someone wants to do research on it go ahead and enlighten me (or us for that matter)

It's natures way of saying "HOW ABOUT SOME FUCKING BIRTH CONTROL?!"
next stop, India.

Personally, No I cannot take this seriously because it seems every damn month a whole bunch people die and if you make the slightest remark of not caring at all people will go beserk on you and call you inhumane, Seriously I laughed at 9/11 because i was suprised it didn't happen SOONER. The true disaster that we should really feel bad about is mankind still exists.

Aside from being nr.1. teenage cliche thing to say; you're clearly saying this out of your own ignorance. If you ever experienced having death and tragedy all around you you'd probably shut your stupid fucking mouth. Have some decensy.

If you don't have anything to say other than HEY I DONT GIVE A FUCK don't post. It's that easy.

sorry for minimod but i got kinda upset :(

Yes, as a matter of fact, Al Gore has already.

Why don't you move to Rwanda for a while? Let's see if this silly teenage pretense is still on your mind then.

Yes, as a matter of fact, Al Gore has already.

Ouch. Bad, Al Gore. Bad. Yes, it's true that scientists have said that global warming can be the cause of such major climatic disturbances. But this is the worst natural disaster to have happened since the earthquake in late 2004, and you should not use it for your own political gain. You should be concerned with using the fact that you're well-known to get people to donate some money rather than standing on a pedestal and saying "this is why I'm right".

yeah I saw this on CNN I think.

Said something about the US trying to send aid and the Myanmar government turning it down or something. I don't agree with it but I guess I can see WHY they're turning US aid down. Maybe they think if they let us in then they'll owe us something? Or that we might try to take over?
