Ok so my dad found a credit card lying around somewhere. I assumed the best thing to do was to call the credit card company. I called the number on the back of the card, but it asked for the last digits of my account number (which I don't have) and when I tried entering the last digits of the card number, it said WRONG and wanted my SSN so I didn't get anywhere with that.

I tried googling for the answer and going to the credit card company's website, but the information is all overwhelmingly WHAT TO DO IF CARD IS LOST/STOLEN. Some random blogs told me that cutting the card up is the best action to take since most people cancel their card, and I'm too lazy to take it to the police station.

Has this occured to anyone else? Should I cut it up or should I put the effort in to find the owner? P.S. this is a serious question so if anyone says BUY A PRIVATE ISLAND or something similar I will warn you! (Exceptions will be made for extremely funny answers, but I warn you that unless you are Hundley the chances of this are very slim)

this is the boring and obvious answer but cut it up and dispose of it properly. i think it's pretty strange you are taking this seriously because this is a pretty common thing i think, the person who owns it probably cancelled it already and has a new one. if they don't cancel the old one, with it cut up and thrown away there's no damage that can be done since only you know the card number.

sorry but i am just keeping it real.

thanks for keepin it real

yeah, if no one gave me any better replies I was going to cut it up, like I said. The only reason I was hesitant is that I can imagine the person losing the card being curious and wanting to know if a BADDIE or a GOODIE found the card

speaking of finding things, from everything i have ever heard in my life usually you will just get cool guy points and not much else for returning anything. it's unfortunate life is not a video game otherwise you would get paladin skills for helping people.

i find stuff sometimes when i am delivering papers and i once found a wallet and inside was the ID of the person. since i have route lists that tell me who lives in every house i just searched the list and delivered it straight to their mail box. these people probably think a GHOST or something did this but it was really me. basically a ghost is stealing all my credit.

My dad found a wallet with a $100 bill in it, but since he is a good guy he went to their house (the guy's driver's license had his address) and tried to return it. He went up to the door and could here people talking to each other inside the house, but nobody answered the door when he knocked (they just went silent inside). He knocked again, same thing. He got mad (because he went out of his way to return it and he got off the bus so he'd have to pay the fare again) so he took the $100 bill and I can't remember what he did with the wallet. I think he put it in their mailbox, maybe? Apparently the guy was a real FOB judging by his info so it's possible they thought my well dressed super anglosaxon dad was the taxman or something so they pretended to not to be home.

It was the worst mistake of their lives.......

like gz said, the best thing you can do is just cut it up or shred it and let the person who lost it figure out it's gone, cancel it, and get a new one.  it's not like they're not already going to get a new one if you've been hanging onto it for a while, i bet.

there was this one time I walked into class early and I saw a card with the activation sticker still on it, so I bent the card  back and forth until it snapped; 30 minutes into the class a girl walks in looking for something around my seat, I kinda had the card still on my desk, but my book was over it.

Good thing I was way to lazy to get up and throw the card away because she checked the garbage can too.

ive never really found much. sometimes people leave stuff at the mall i work at, so i got 5 bucks and two packs of cigarettes out of that. i could have had some panties and yesterday someone left some girly socks, but those aren't really my thing. one girl also left a little change pursed packed with twenties, but she came back for it later and there is still an old dead cell phone in the drawer behind the counter.

My girlfriend found a wallet was $260 dollars in it recently, and she gave it all back. Some of my friends seem to think you're allowed a 'finders fee' or something but they're probably just shitbags. I think in your dads situation that was alright if they were being lame.

But yeah ASE - snip it up. If you don't wanna take it to the cop station it's the best course of action.

ok your friend clearly has supervision or something cause that is very freakin hard to believe

i make a point to take the money every time i find something like that, because i know if i lose my wallet, i can't count on the finder being a sensitive little girl who would return it to me.

I once found a wallet with 35 euros in it. Turns out I knew who it belonged to, but
the guy was a complete bastard so I took the money and put the wallet back.

I'm not a good person, now I think about it.

whatewver you do DO NOT return it to the owner, for all you know they're freaking terrorists and if that's the case you may as well be funding them yourself. donot support terrorism.

Yeah, toss it. The owner most likely already canceled it.

If I found a wallet with some money in it, I would probably return it. I said probably because, if I have a bill that's overdue or if I'm low on food and have been surviving on crackers and peanut butter, there's no doubt that I'm taking the money and using it for myself.

Real talk.

Personally I would stop being lazy and take it to the police station.

I once found 200$ on the road, Near log cabin (A convenience store near where I live) i thought about putting up an ad for it or w/e but then I thought "screw that if someones that irresponsible to leave 200$ unprotected on the ground then it's fair game." and I still have it somewhere because I don't have anything I need to spend 200$ on. seriously who carries 200$ around with them while going to a convenience store?

But yeah you should take the credit card to the police station, the person might of cancled it but it's just in case.

Yeah, cutting it up is really the best thing to do.  That way, it can't be used again.  So the owner won't be charged in the very least for charges -- the worst that'd happen is they have to get a new one.  "ho noes!!!!"
