My country is going downhill badly. I am English through and through and have lived here all my life but lately I have just wanted to get out and move abroad. First of all, let's take a few examples of this pathetic law/justice system we have.

1. My friend was fined £50 (or more) for smoking at a bus stop. In England it against the law to smoke in public enclosed spaces (pubs, clubs, restaurants etc) but come on, A BUS STOP that doesn't even have a roof? And there wasn't even anyone else around?

2. Today I was at a parade and there was this guy trying to sell flags (THAT HE HAD ALREADY PAID FOR) to general public. A policewoman stopped him and asked if he had a permit. Ok that is fair enough but  she spent like HALF HOUR lecturing the poor guy! Seriously you'd think the police woman would have more important things to do, like catching real criminals.

3. In the paper there was a story about a guy who had 5 cops sent around his house for playing music too loudly. Ok maybe he shouldn't have music on too loud but 5 COPS. How the fuck does that take five cops. I mean all it takes is one cop and even then you'd think the neighbours would just knock the door and say "can you turn your music down". What the fuck.

4. Now this is the most SICKENING of all. In my local area there was this robber who got 7 years in prison for stealing a large sum of money and expensive items from somewhere. He was about 35 and in his life he has never killed anyone, beat up anyone or anything too traumatic. Meanwhile a rapist who raped a young girl of 15 only got like 2 years in jail and a rehabilitation order because the judge thought he was "mentally unstable". WHAT THE FUCK. I know who I would rather bump into in a street.

Those are just a few of a load of examples. I swear to god sometimes the majority of my country is getting stupider and stupider. Who knows, maybe that film Idiocracy was right after all.

Just so this isn't me ranting.... What about where you live? As daft as this or what? What are your laws like? How about health services? The society in which you live etc

Australia is trying to censor the internet! Thanks Kevin Rudd I knew you had a hard-on for China but HONESTLY.

Holy !@#$ I just read about this now. If they want to censor anything then censor fucking sickos not honest citizens who shouldn't have their freedom restricted.

Everyone use this topic to let off steam.

Where I live is much, much worse. I've become desensitized to a lot of stuff living in Trinidad. We have a small population (about 1.5 million) and have about two murders a day. Crime is crazy here and we're barbaric as fuck because they think HANGING PEOPLE is good here. We have a corrupt as fuck government that always wins the party elections.

Food prices are ridiculous. It's so ridiculous that people rob food trucks on the highway like every week. There about fifty kidnappings per year (usually children of businessmen) so everyone's afraid to start a business.

1800 murders for the past 5 years.
20% detection.
Less than 1% conviction.

We have ministers that swear at people. Vendors that try to make an honest living have their stalls destroyed by police for some shady reason. We've had instances where policemen harassed homosexuals and made them strip.  There's approximately one stabbing per day in one of our secondary schools.  People die in the public hospitals often because they ask them to sleep on the cold stone floor. The Prime Minister cannot afford beds for the hospital but he can afford to buy and maintain a $10,000,000 mansion and a private jet.

I know personally one person who has been killed by a drunk off-duty policeman. I know personally a kidnap victim, about a dozen people who have been mugged or carjacked (I've been mugged once too). The police are incompetent and corrupt and seem to do more harm than good. We currently have numerous ministers and the Opposition Leader under corruption charges. We have one that pleaded insanity for shooting someone and ended up in the asylum.

Protests are shut down by the police (someone was shot and killed at one once). A TV host once tried to organize a march and they arrested him for some shady reason. Fifteen years back, there was a failed coup de tat. The leader of the coup de tat was never arrested and operates freely now. Bombs go off in garbage cans sometimes in the capital (a explanation has never been given). People get shot, kidnapped and raped in broad daylight. Students staying on campus (there's only one university here) have criminals climb through their windows and rob them on a regular basis (JESUS CLOSE YOUR WINDOWS).

We've had several gruesome murders committed by youths. The most notable and recent one is where a 13 and 15 year old boy shoved a cane up a 6 year old boy's anus until it almost came out of his mouth, for no given reason.

A radical Muslim group called the Jamaat Al-Muslimeen (headed by the dude who attempted the coup de tat lol) operates almost freely here (remember when a dude from Trini tried to blow up the JFK airport in NY?).

And worst of all, half of us think nothing is wrong with any of this and the other half of us never do anything about it except complain to the newspaper (which is biased).

Jesus, I was just going to post about how shitty the local health system is and how the police are being used as private guards for rich neighbourhoods, but people being raped in broad daylight pretty much tops anything I could say.

That sounds terrible. Have those problems put fear into the general public where you live? I know in England many people are too scared of going out by themselves in certain areas. Where I live we have gangs of hooligans and as soon as its dark its pretty much a no go zone. Heck even when its not dark people have to be cautious. My brothers friend is currently in intensive care after being beaten up badly at 4PM in the afternoon. Its sad because it never used to be like this where I lived, especially not as a kid. When I was 8 I don't remember gangs, I don't remember murderers/rapists etc. Heck at 8 years old I was walking 5 minutes to my friends because it was such a friendly neighbourhood where everybody knew each other. Nowadays parents are too scared to let their kids out onto the door step.

Worrying times. :(

Edit: Nevermind I just noticed your comment at the end about "half of us think nothing is wrong...". Wow thats awful. :\

EDIT: But seriously, that is sickening and horrible. And there I was, bitching about the US.

Uh, if you really want to know:

1. Try your best not to go out of your house after 8pm.

2. Always travel in groups. NEVER ALONE.

3. Never dress sharp. Never wear excessive bling-bling. Drive an old beat-up car. Don't walk while listening to your iPOD. Basically, look poor.

4. Stay away from anywhere close to the ghetto areas.

5. It helps if you went to school with the current generation of gangsters in the neighbourhood you live in (like me lol).

Is it actually like the ghetto? Do you take all of those precautions daily?

Man I feel bad for hijacking this topic!

Is it actually like the ghetto? Do you take all of those precautions daily?

Like (almost) every country, there are the affluent areas and the impoverished areas and the in-betweens. I live in an in-between and nothing really happens where I live except for some robberies. We've never been robbed but our neighbour has. One of my friends lives in one of the poorer areas and he's been robbed about 6 times, I think.

As for the precautions, yeah, a lot of people take them daily. The majority of people you hear getting robbed and kidnapped here didn't do one of those. Travelling in groups is sort of a common sense here. Before you go out, it's always, "Never find yourself isolated." Especially if you're going out at night. About dressing sharp and not wearing jewelry, a lot of the kids here follow that too. If you walk into a "fete" (local concert) here with a gold chain around your neck, expect it to be snatched by the end of the night (I actually knew a guy who had his snatched AS SOON as he walked inside).

1. Bus stops come under the current anti-smoking legislation. That's why there are 'no smoking' signs at bus stops. Shouldn't have been smoking there.

2. Selling goods en masse without a permit is against the law. He was a real criminal. He was most likely let off with a warning, and to be let off with a warning requires a full explanation of the crime to be given.

3. That's... perfectly normal for a breach of the peace. The number is to deter and counter any violent behavior that could conceivably be encountered in such a situation. Better to be safe than sorry!

4. Yeah, a long term prison sentence is a great idea for someone who's mentally unstable, and not really damaging to their mental well-being, endangering other inmates and prison officers.

So yeah, these are all examples of the police and the criminal justice system doing their jobs properly, not some fatally flawed system.

Man am I glad to be living in NY. Even though NY has a huge amount of crime and I've been mugged 3 times, atleast its nothing like Trinidad. I've also heard similar stories about my original country, Bangladesh. It sucks that there are people in this world that would do stuff like this. :(

My mom told me a story once that back in the Philippines, she was walking home alone one day from school, and two men were following her. She realized this pretty quickly and took to the hills as fast as she could -- when you think about that, that's a pretty stupid thing of her to have done. She was maybe 7 years old, and definitely could not run from them for long. But she hid under some rocks around a bend in the hill while the two men CHASED after her. It's just really, really sick and I'm sure glad that she was alright.

Needless to say, from then on she walked with her brother home every day.

They are covered under the new laws as some do totally cover you. He'd also have been fined before the new ban as they have no smoking stickers there anyway (since like 2000)
