The point of my post was NOT to say it's "ok" to call anyone anything, or to try to redefine any hateful slur. The point is that there is a difference between using the word "Faggot" as an insult versus using it as an ordinary part of speech. If you're the kind of person who's offended by the word "faggot," you need to take a step back and try to understand why it offends you. If you're not what one would consider a faggot, you're putting power behind the word. This is why I don't get offended when someone says "That's gay," because if I did, it would reinforce the idea that being gay is something negative, which is obviously not something I agree with. If you ARE what one would consider a faggot (regardless of whether you're gay or straight, again), it's a direct attack on you as a person, which is obviously very hurtful, however valid. Again, this doesn't make it okay to use such words in everyday speech, as you risk unintentionally insulting people. But again, the point of my post isn't to say it's okay to use such words in ordinary speech, just that there are multiple uses for these words. How they affect you is almost always determined by YOU. Don't put the power behind the word, and people will stop using it, or its meaning will change (which is the point of this topic).
