Nobody's challenging anyone, and in fact he pointed out in his initial post that that was exactly what he didn't want to do, but LANGUAGE IS FLUID is a ridiculous justification because faggot has since its inception been a homophobic slur, and will probably continue to be one for a while. It's not necessarily bigotry but at the very least it's fairly insensitive and just dismissing the problem with using the word as an insult by calling language fluid by nature is kind of a copout!
Ok, well first of all I wasn't calling him out on that. It wasn't even directed at anyone in particular.
Secondly, I am aware that some people use it as a homophobic slur and that is as far as I know (or am concerned) its origin. I don't think anyone is going to disagree that not only does language change over time, but that we have the power to define what we mean (which is simply what I meant by fluid). Now, I could just start saying things like ping pot pang wow and mean something deep and profound but you would have no idea what I'm talking about and disregard it most likely. So I'm not advocating everyone say whatever they want, especially in this case where there is an obvious overlap between original meaning and the current intended meaning. I am not dismissing the problem entirely as noted by the fact I made other posts, but I'm not going to cater my language to never offend anyone ever ever for fear of being 'insensitive.'
