The Matses are a tribe of people living in the Amazon.  They are similar (I don't know if the ones you are talking about are the same).  They are crazzyyy.  They take poison from the tree frogs, burn a hole in their skin, put the poison directly in their bloodstream, and then they throw up a lot.  It's messed up.  I have gained an interested in studying about indigenous groups of people and I find them fascinating.

These people are cool they hunt and gather shit...not dandelions but other shit :)

Also, they've lived this way for over 10,000 years I find it awesome that they can survive this way of life for that long.  I'm going to try this sometime in the future lol.

you guys are acting like this is something new. like once every year one of these pops up in the news...............

anyway this video is pretty interesting, it kind of explains the situation. most of the tribes are in contact with other tribes who might've been in contact with the "civilized world". they are still considered uncontacted people but there's a lot of random elements that decide which tribes ends up meeting cvilization and which dont (do they live near a river where the police patrols for head hunters? is their settlement in a range for nomads of the tribe to reach woodcutters?)

anyway the video is pretty amazins for this stuff I recommend ya'll watch I have and I enjoyed it very much.

yeah hi I thought the tree frogs' poison containts LSA? LSA pretty much is a psychedellic that comes with naseau that in larger doses will make you throw up unless you smoke a lot of cannabis to ease it down (which they obviously have). I don't like you explain the phenomenon simply by "YEAH THEY TAKE POISON AND THROW UP CRAZY PEOPLE HUH" when in fact it is a very potent psychedellic that can be used for religious and spiritual experiences.

It's gotta suck knowing you are one of the last remaining people of your tribe:
"Kanoe do Omere is an uncontacted tribe in Rondonia state, Brazil. When first contacted in 1995, the tribe numbered 5 people. But of that a women named Tutua and an infant boy named Opera later died of poisoning by ranchers(According to Survival). Now the tribe consists of a women named Txinamanty (~ 42 years old), her brother Purá (~ 37 years old) and a child who was born to Txinamanty and Baba(an Akuntsu tribesman)."

is it just me or do those photos look like late 90's god-sim game graphics? i'm not suggesting they are fake at all, it just took me like 5 minutes to come around to the idea that they were real.

anyway i've always been aware that groups like this exist, i've never thought about the whole culture shock aspect though. this shit could be a star trek episode. i wouldn't want to visit these tribes, though, honestly. it is fascinating to see groups like this today, that they've by some chance or choice remained totally cut off and for whatever reason haven't moved beyond a period of cultural evolution like most other countries. still, it seems kind of uh rude i guess to barge in there and make them watch miami vice or whatever! i am for letting them be who they are, and try not to fly planes over their villages cos it seems to totally piss them off.

i'm basically talking about the prime directive.

There was an article in a paper from 1994 about this group of people on an island that hasn't had contact with the outside world and civilized humans brought media in (tv's, radios...etc) and studied them.  Also, there was another thing where there was a group of uncontacted people on an island and a plane flew over.  They didn't know what it was so they thought it was some sort of "god" thing and started worshipping it.

I'm gonna try to find it but one group of peoples in the Amazon have absolutely no concept of numbers whatsoever.  I read that two Dutch (I think it was) people went live with them for about a year and tried to teach them how to count but they just couldn't grasp it at all.

We should drive them away from their village and into the nearest civilized big city. Lulz ensue.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The tribe have been seen cultivating various hallucinogenics and what is presumed to be cannabis in fields adjacent to the huts. It has been proven that the penis has been consumed by many of the males in order to prove a ritual to the gods of the underworld.

Sounds quaint.

theologians are awful

anyway yeah first contact is actually pretty rare these days considering the advent of shit like... helicopters heheh so its always a cool thing when it happens. Its far more rare for this to happen in New Guinea than it is in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Amazon though because none of those places have mountains that planes/helicopters literally cannot fly over heh. New Guinea has all sorts of crazy shit going on up in its mountain valleys. For instance in the 1960s first contact was made with a group of people who had been isolated in a mountain valley who had developed an intensive system of silviculture (basically raising orchards) and somehow were cultivating several non-native crops as well. Heh I dont know where I'm going with that but yeah this is cool shit

(oh yeah, I want to be a cultural anthropologist so yeah this is kinda like.. one of my areas of expertise?)

You know, when I first saw these photos yesterday, it made me think of a pretty great sci-fi plot.

These guys are living now approximately the same way their ancestors lived ten thousand years ago, almost totally unaware of what the rest of the world has been doing. How funny would it be to find out that the Earth we know is just like one of these tribes, and that without our knowledge there are already other humans out there exploring the galaxy and we are to these others as these un-contacted tribes are to us.

I personally thought that idea for a sci-fi short story Arthur C. Clarkish style would be awesome. Like it came straight into my mind the image of people in spaceships watching the news that "another planet has been found with isolated civilization" lol. Awesome.

If you want to use your animal comparison, this is more like filming animals in the wild, which is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT than animals in zoos.  We're not doing anything bad here, fuck, the whole point of this group is to PROTECT AND PRESERVE them and keep their land from being taken.

Your making an animal comparison? Your joking right?  Do you know how fucking arrogant that is?

Even if i humor what you said, what a blind contradiction to say its 'entirely different than animals in zoos', when 'the purpose of the group is to PROTECT AND PRESERVE'. Its still an obvious containment. We're already turning them into a freak show, just look at some of the comments.

Some of the people in this thread are treating them like sub-class already. Crack out the guns and microscopes ay?

you're waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy~~~~ overeacting dude. most of the comments are "what ifs" and what's wrong with finding someone whos vastly different from us interesting? i can be interested in for example canadian culture and say similar comments. it doesn't mean that they are disrespectful at all.

this is pretty fucking incredible.

they're better off like this imo!

Yeah, I'm not so sure about this. We don't have any right (other than six thousand years of precedent I guess) to force contact on them, but it's not like they are happy without the modern trappings of civilization. Unless that Wikipedia article is full of lies like half those tribes are constantly fighting with each other/themselves, and a couple of them are repeatedly getting massacred. Admittedly, they're not doing with AK47s like in the Sudan or anything, but there is a lot to be said for a society that has rules about murdering 20-50 people because you want some fish from their river or something (Iraq War lol!!).

From my well-documented games of Civ2 I have learned that the probably course of action for any uncontacted tribe is that another race (probably the fucking Spanish or English) is going to come along and bomb their cities with an Ironclad and then land some cannons there and then suggest a friendly happy peace treaty, because they are just making first contact.

But yeah, this is pretty cool. Of course, if you met one of these tribes they would probably murder you immediately (some wouldn't, I'm sure, but generally you react with fear rather than understanding to aliens) but it would be neat to get some awesome satellite pictures of these guys rather than Raul shooting shots from his crummy camera out of a plane window.

Also, Apathy, Velfarre wasn't even making an animal comparison, she was extending someone else's metaphor. Maybe you should read entire threads instead of making angry posts (oh the internet it just gets me so mad!!!) about one of the posts!

p.s. they are a subclass. I am not sure what their primary class would be, but probably one of the larger Amerindian tribes of the rain forest.

@Vesper
I completely agree that MOST of the comments seem to be coming from a position of genuine curiosity. However, SOME can be interpreted differently and as "disrespectfull".

@Kaempfer
Missed that...sorry to Velfarre, it was a snap response post... and if my tone was overly aggressive i apologize.

But in response to you, what i meant was they are not a subclass in relation to us (as they are not even part of our societal structure or its norms). That is a tone i picked up in certain parts of the thread; that they were inferior supposed to different.
