I saw this on the news a while ago and thought "what the hell? How did he pull that off?". Then I saw the basement, and no joke, it is like a bomb shelter.
It is pretty deep underground, totally sound proof (and bomb proof I would imagine), the door to get in and out has an electronic lock and it is a massive steel/concrete reinforced door that you couldn't knock down in 100 years. The actual layout of the basement looked like it had been planned out and you could have lived in it, it has a bedroom (big enough to fit 4 beds in), bathroom and kitchen.
Either this guy was some kook who got a bomb shelter made to prepare for the end of the world, or he had been planning to do something like this for a long time.
I am also suprised his wife didn't know. Fair enough, he was the only person who could get in and the basement was totally sound proof. But still, how did he get away with building a slave chamber in his basement? And how did he get away with going down to it everyday (for possibly hours I would imagine)? His wife must have noticed something was suspicious with the way he was acting.

How could a 19 year old and a 42 year old not overwelm a 72 year old man? They must have been so used to living there that they didnt try escape or something. It's a pity he's too old to spend his entire life rotting in jail.

I think he probably kept her sedated and handcuffed (like when he locked her in the cellar), I don't think you can overwhelm anyone in that state
