someone said they were having trouble with civ but I can't really give any good tips. I've been playing the civ games on and off for a ridiculously long time now and I'm still figuring out new stuff, a lot of it's just shit you pick up over time. India with a spiritual leader is pretty good for beginners I think.

Pretty much this, basically just set it to the easiest setting and play around with shit.  You start off with no idea of what you're doing, which makes you want to give up, but if you keep going you figure out the game.  The biggest thing I can recommend is (at least in Civ4, not sure how it applies to others) read the tooltips on units and technologies and such.  It helps out quite a bit to see exactly what they all do, instead of just guessing.

Okay dudes this is a bump and double post and everything, but has anyone seen this game for sale yet?  I checked several websites and saw release dates as everything between yesterday (which Tuesday is a big day for game releases so that made sense) to the 11th.  Some sort of countdown widget had it set for midnight this morning/last night.  I went looking for it yesterday on the information that it was the 8th and saw it nowhere at three different stores.  Does anyone know the release date FOR SURE and/or has a copy yet?

I have to go out today anyway so I was planning on checking again, hopefully I can get a copy.

I've never seen so much confusion over a release date before, almost EVERY website I checked said the 8th, one or two said the 9th, and Amazon said 8th but wouldn't have them in until the 10th (11th for 360).

So I just played a couple games of the DS version.  It definitely feels like Civilization, albeit a faster, watered-down version.  I won both games on King difficulty (normal) with a domination and cultural victories.  Even though I was constantly in a state of war (in both games), my cities were never once attacked by any enemy, making the game feel way too easy.  Also, my fighter planes were shot down by PIKEMEN.
In the end, I'd recommend it if you wanted a Civilization-On-The-Go experience, but all it really did for me was make me want to play Civ4 again (especially with Colonization being released later this year).

I got the 360 version today, I really can't say anything that wasn't already mentioned in every single review ever:  they did SUCH a good job making it console-friendly.  It's fun to play and very well structured.  The one thing I noticed is that the AI seemed like they were a little more hostile (on the second difficulty level, the one right after the tutorial one) than on Civ 4, but I guess it was actually kind of good at first because it encouraged me to attack more often instead of just CULTURING my way through things.  However, towards the very end they started all attacking me because I was getting so close to a technological (space) victory.

Still, that's the only real flaw I've found!  Well, unless you count the lack of background music (it plays music when important things happen, but not throughout).  That's easily fixed with your own music though, so in my next game I'm just going to plug my iPod into the 360.

I don't have access to the internet with my 360 right now because my brother is home and the router is in his room (I am thinking about running a wire from it to my room though if we have one long enough), but he is leaving this coming weekend for a handful of days, so if I can I'll try doing some multiplayer then...who's interested?

Civ has been long running one of my favourite franchises and I think it has consistently improved over the years since I first played the original back on MS-DOS. This LOOKS really good and the speedy multiplayer SOUNDS good but I'll really have to just see for myself.

yeah i've only played like 20 minutes of any other civ game but i can see that this game is a lot more WACKY HILARIOUS LMAO than the others so if that attitude annoys you i guess you won't like it so much. it also seems more shallow, which is a given cos it's console etc but i haven't played the other games properly yet so i can't comment!

I have a question. Is it as lengthy and in depth? I like having LONG DRAWN OUT BATTLES OVER SMALL ISLANDS I don't want to ahve just one hours worth of gameplay when some of my bigger civ2 games would last weeks.

well it seems to me like it is very easy to massively overpower enemies on easier difficulties, but i can see struggles to take cities etc taking a long time and lots of different kinds of assault at once, that kind of thing.

but yeah, i think the games are a lot shorter in this. i think that fact is one of it's selling points.

I like the seriousness in previous Civ games (if you could call it that personally I thought they were kind of goofy too) but I actually like how silly this one is.  Especially if you fly through menus like I do so you have about three or four different people getting pissed off at being shoved out of the way.

yeah velma the other civ games are kind of silly but this one just really amps it up - but i agree that it's not a bad thing. when you genocide barabarians, their comments are pretty HAHA SILLY but they are funny, too. also you are genociding games aren't good or bad

what i meant was if you found the goofy touches (and by goofy i mean stupid, trying to be funny but actually stupid) in the last games almost game endingly annoying then this will be unbearable.

Yeah I knew what you meant.  Also I agree that the barbarians are pretty gr9, they're so sure that they're going to kill you...until you capture all of their "least favorite" cities.  As in, all of them.

I pointed out one time that Velfarre looked like Velma

Payback for the fact she does not look like Daria anymore.

Also I wanted to try CIV4 once but my pc is too gay. I wonder if I'd like it.

Yeah also I was trying really hard to find this Scooby Doo scene in while in IRC.

Anyway I think it's kind of gay that you have to be connected to Xbox Live the whole time you're playing the Game of the Week!  My internet keeps dropping and it completely quit my game when it happened.  I understand it not letting you save so you can't cheat but making you stay online?  Kinda shit!

Okay I got this yesterday for the 360 and it is fucking awesome. Anyone else who has it and wants to play me, let's do it. Anyway there are SOME nags I have it but overall it's a really fluid game and despite being streamlined doesn't sell out so much of the awesomeness of the other games. You don't have to worry about things like civil disorder, pollution, units being away from home etc. The closest thing to civil disorder is not maintaining a balanced culture which causes your borders to shrink and that is an easy fix, (like 2 - 4 turns for a city without a temple/cathedral.) The only way I've seen to cause pollution is the ONE nuclear bomb in the game which I always get but never use because it makes me feel really bad about myself and you can pretty much mass produce armies towards the endgame and nobody really cares what happens to them. I think most of my cities towards the endgame were stockpiling like x15 Modern Infantry with upgrades and I became pretty untouchable.

FIRST NAG, Cannot "upgrade" units so you end up with all your useless obsolete warriors stagnating in your cities towards the later game. In earlier civ games you could sacrifice them to the production pool and in effect "upgrade" them with a payoff of about 2 turns. You cannot do that anymore and I ended up cannon foddering them or using them to block the expansion areas of other cities because that is all they were good for.

Second nag, the FOUR DIFFERENT PLAYSTYLES are not actually that different at all. I use my regular tactic of pumping my science and blitzing for the "Gunpowder" tech and by the time I get there I'm stockpiling riflemen while the other civs are just about inventing pikemen. I then gun for "Flight" and by that point I've got the culture to be able to win a culture victory, couple of techs away from "Bombers" and Space-flight and I've already mass produced enough tanks to get the domination victory. I'm overloaded on production so if I want an economic victory I just switch all the towns to produce gold and end up with like 3000 - 4000 gold PER TURN and like 10 turns away from the economic win.

This ONE STRATEGY can bring you to first place win in any of the four "play-styles" so the ways of playing aren't really that different at all.

Anyway.

GONNA GO PLAY SOME MORE BYE.

I've racked up all 4 play style wins on Chieftan and Warlord... Gotta get those DEITY wins.
