maybe i am stupid but can these companies even sue? it's not like they are taking the original game resources, it's a screenshot. this is obviously POOR SHOW, but i am not sure how you can sue because you can take billions of screenshots in any given 3-d game (especially since it can be rendered differently, and all the angles). maybe if they ripped from 2-d games i could understand, bt i don't know how this would work out in 3-d games. even if they could sue, couldn't they just make minor changes to all images and it would subvert this problem? basically are there any LEGAL guys here who know how this works?

anyway yeah this looks incredibly bad, but i will admit when i first saw the trailer i didn't know about this topic and did not notice any of the locations, even though i played many of those games.

It is plagiarism and they are making money off of the work of other people that they did not have the permission from to use the assets from.

So yes.

But they could sue anyways, you can sue for anything.

but is this really assets? some of the stuff like directly ripped sprites, yes, but i am not so sure about the 3-d stuff. i would say they are assets if they took the 3-d models and textures directly, but they are taking snapshots of a rendered 3-d world.

i recall the watermark topic a while ago, where gaming sites watermark their screenshots. they are claiming ownership of the screen, even though they are doing exactly what this game does. some of these sites even profit off of it by having PREMIUM and shit like that. so could RANDOM GAME contact IGN and tell them to remove screenshots from their game if they wanted to? for some reason i just don't think this would work in a legal sense.

maybe i am stupid though???

IGN has permission from the company to use their screenshots and put a water mark and possibly profit off it by making certain pictures/videos/etc require a fee to see.

These guys don't, and made a full fledged product (ie: not just a few screenshots) off of the hard work of other people, and used their hard work to make a profit.

i'm pretty sure if the company of a game wanted to pull screenshots from Gamespot or something they have all the legal power to do so. hell, konami made youtube pull down the entire set of mgs4 walkthrough videos a few days ago, but then again it's KONAMI so perhaps it would be different for obscure companies. i don't know!

yes it is completely in their power if they so wish to do this. Companies have control over this stuff basically, and if you are making a profit off of it and they don't like that, they can easily sue, and will most likely win.

I was doing a really low-key project with Guild Wars' skill icons, and I had to ask permission, even if I wasn't making profit off of it. It's part of the ToU (or twas that EULA). They let me do it because I wasn't making a profit off of it, but still. These guys are, and these companies aren't going to take lightly to that.

EDIT:
Also GZ, the sites like IGN etc, are claiming exclusive ownership of the screen, but they are not plagiarizing, ie: calling it their own work. These guys have taken works and ideas from other people and claimed it as there own work (at no point do they mention they have used works from other games, nor do they have the permission to do so).

This game has to be a huge joke.  It's reached internet meme status what with that hilarious photoshop website.  I want this to gain popularity so it becomes the next new joke.  Soon random nerds will be dressing up as this guy at cons or defacing art by painting him into the backgrounds of pictures.

They're comparison shots, aten. It's showing the LotL screen and then the Oblivion screen. I haven't played oblivion either and I get it.

It's in the process of investigation right now, apparently.

Yeah. Apparently the BIG HUGE PICTURES weren't loading properly at home, but at work they loaded proper and now i can actually see the comparisons and its like  :fogetgasp:

Wether it's deliberate or not, what makes me sick about the release of this game isn't even the plagarism anymore.

It's the idea that someone publishing and retailing a profoundly shitty game that doesn't even try to hide the fact that it has nothing original (or even enjoyable) to offer is somehow so awesome (I'm guessing in some sort of postmodern self-pretentious sort of way) that it warrants people to actually express admiration for it. "Hey look guys! Theese people just proved how gullible and moronic the gaming industry is! Lets give them a medal for proving something that (guess what?) everybody already knew!"

No. Just no. There is nothing good, much less ADMIRABLE, about this. I cannot imagine how there can be even a single thing that makes what just happened here good in any way at all. If any one of you guys raving about how "awesome" these guys are for doing this could explain it to me, I would love to hear it because apparently there is some peice of missing peice of logic that I'm not getting. There has to be a reason behind your opinion, but as it stands now none of you are making any sense to me whatsoever.

EvilDemonCreature, we're all getting a kick out of how ridiculously stupid these guys were. It's literally unfathomable to even begin to understand the logic behind these guys. They're just that stupid.

The same thing happens on the RPG Maker scene. If someone releases their "game" and it is nothing but stolen maps from, say, A Blurred Line, then everyone is going to point and laugh and saym "Haha, what an idiot!" That is what's happening here.

EDIT: Holy.. What?? How do you compare this to the war in Iraq?

* The Octave Doctor compares whatever I don't like to a war because I can't come up with a real arguement.
