of heart failure. He was 71.

Quote
LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

I really didn't expect him to die this decade, honestly. My dad's a pretty big fan of his and he's REALLY bummed out right now.

Goodnight, my dear Rufus.

i wasn't the biggest fan of his stand up but from what i can tell he was a pretty damn decent guy and i'm surprised and sad at his death. i was just listening to an album of his the other day, i didn't know he was as old as 71.

he did do some cool stuff though. as overplayed as a lot of his bits are, his seven words you can't say bit and the 21st century man monologue are a couple of the outstanding things i can think of so yeah a sad event!

Man, I just heard about this.

This is a huge bummer. I usually don't feel all that emotional about famous people dying, but this is really making me feel sad.

RIP

AHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh

man, this sucks sososososos much...

I think he was probably my second favorite right after Hicks and now they're both dead. Atleast he had a damn good run and its a shame he's gone.

I'm gonna try to find a clip of one of my favorite bits by him right now if I can so you guys can see how awesome he really was despite that stupid list shit that kind of put me off.

its his take on the apocalypse when one event escalates into another and another, its sort of long but its worth watching. (Ignore the beginning bullshit and it ends at 6:30.)

I don't know what to say, honestly.. I idolized this guy. I listened to him weekly, read his books often, and generally hear his lines in my head almost daily.

This sucks. A lot.

Holyshit this is a big bomb. I'm glad nothing bad is happening right now. This is horrible news. He did some of the best standup.  :fogetcry:
Though, he wasn't exactly young so it isn't that bad.

Same here.  I'm kicking myself in the ass now for not going to see him when I had the chance.

Oh snap, that's terrible. Wasn't expecting that at all, what a bad piece of news. :(

Also he was only 71 man, you usually expect FAMOUS PEOPLE to live until their 80s or something!

This is insane, many icons have been dying this year, George Carlin was one that I strongly recognized and appreciated. A sad loss.
