Back around the early 1990's a game came out, Wolfenstien 3D. A game made by the software developer, id. This was not the first of it's kind but the controversy it created made it a very notable game. Wolfenstien, followed shortly after by Doom,(also made by id) really made the idea of a first person shooting game very appealing.

Everyone remembers when they were a kid, or maybe a teenager, the first FPSes. Increasingly around 1996, the term 'doom clone' was thrown around like a rag doll, but the number of uses of the word decreased as other, more exciting games came out that pretty much blew the shit out of doom. Games like Half-Life and Unreal Tournament really did the business right. They were amazing at the time and incredibly groundbreaking, just like the games that started it all. Now games like Doom, Half-Life, Quake, Marathon(for mac gamers), and Unreal are pretty much considered classics among people who have played and been through the games of the 90's.

FPSes are growing more and more popular and everyone knows that means there is an increase of assholes just trying to get a few bucks by suckering people into buying a horrible product... That and novice companies who actually put heart into their work but just don't quite make the mark... yet.

Sorry if I'm getting a little out of hand here, or if I'm not entirely accurate. In any case, it would be impossible to make this a poll. To my point, what is your favorite classic FPS and why?

I know this might be lame, but I must say, my favorite classic FPS is still Doom. Why? Because after a certain point in time, after you beat the game, there were always more levels to play. The style of the game was really amazing too, and it hardly ever got old if you played it in moderation. Today, there are a community of players who still play doom. Not as the original game but in ports that enhance the gameplay. The fact that the community is still strong is just more reason to keep playing.

Heretic is where it's at, man. I loved Heretic 'cause you had MAGIC and shit. Hexen comes a close second because you could use a sword, axe/mace (can't remember) or magic wand as well, iirc. I liked magical things when I was a young man. :>

I was a big Marathon Infinity Player (Marathon 3) I'd spend hours doing nothing but killing endless respawns on a random level. I played the previous 2 (Marathon and Marathon 2: Durandal) All three of these games had some of the best storyline for any game rivaling that of major titles such as FF7

Among the best thing with Marathon however was the massive Modding Community thanks to the release of Anvil and Forge. We saw ridiculous Physics Models and some really fun custom Campaigns always adding in some fun stuff.

Do I really need to tell? I guess I do.

DooM. DooM was for me, is for me and will always be for me.

DooM.

DooM. I don't even care about anything else. DooM. Ok, that's a lie, but still: DooM.

Pretty much this, I loved the Heretic series and I still play them regularly today.

deffinetely quake, the original one. I spent so much time on that game, I think it was the super gritty atmosphere that did it.

I still play Doom so.. Doom. I doubt there will ever be a time when I could say I AM NEVER PLAYING DOOM AGAIN. I wish I knew why even. They are very old at this point and lack any BELLS AND WHiSTLES and yet I still have a blast when I play them! I guess there is something very basic about them that is plain and simple fun.. no item management, no stats, no complex interplay between factions vying for control of something... it's just gameplay. I don't really believe in this sort of design for a game, but something about Doom makes me OK with it. Maybe it's the enemy design, maybe the atmosphere and surreal design of the levels, maybe even the GRUNTS AND GROANS of the enemies, idk! But Doom remains one of my favourite games even today!

Tribes had to be one of my all time favorite multiplayer FPSes. All the weapons taking time to reach their target meant you pretty much had to lead everything, and with the amount of speed and height you got with the jetpack combined with "skiing" the terrain, they were some pretty intense battles.

I guess the three Doom games? I still get spooked out to this day when a huge cyber demon is clicking around, not knowing what corner he is around. Oh and Marathon: Durandal is pretty fun, too.

Wait, if you are considering Half Liife, then that is definitely my favorite of the classics. It is actually one of my favorite games of all time.

I find Quake to still be relevant and playable even now. I still have the original CD and case for it.

Tribes was absolutely amazing.  We need more FPSes with jet packs

I'm constantly surprised by the amount of people that enjoy Doom. Question: Do you also like Wolfenstein 3D? Because those two are very similar from what I remember.

My favorite....well, I'm not really a fan of FPS so I would have to say that I like/hate them all equally. no FPS has ever captured my fancy too much (well, with the exception of The World is not Enough for n64, but that was years ago, and coming back to it its actually a really limited game, but still fun.)

Duke Nukem 3D is my favorite 'classic' FPS that are with in the shell of '2.5D' graphics.

If your talking actual 3D but low-poly my favorite would be... hmmm... Half life, despite the fact that I didn't play it back when it was new... in fact the first time I did play through it was this year. And I liked Red faction a lot.

Deffinately Doom, gotta love the BFG...
Some friends and I were playing a group game at school last year. Damn that was awesome, I really want to play it now. But I don't have it any more.

Blood,
I loved that you played a Sadistic Undead Cowboy.
And the bit where he comes across the body of his wife and yells "SHOW YOURSELF DEMON"
that was pretty powerful stuff back in the day.

I used to play all these with my father, mainly Wolfenstein and Doom. The best thing about both of them though was the difficulty selection and the health indicator, those type of things are etched into my mind.

When you have a bow and arrow does 'Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss' count as an fps because that was epic. I remember that thing had like 12 floppy disks for installation.

You've probably heard of this:
http://doom.chaosforge.org/
(Doom the Rogue-like - The music and everything brought back so many memories)

But this is pretty new to me (even though its like a year old):

(Wolfenstein 3d - Ds Port - I guess the new ones out already so id look at little later on).

Duke and Rise of the Triad were both pretty badass. Never really liked Doom too much but I did play it quite a bit.

I didn't think anyone else played Rise of the Triad here. It's the first multiplayer (network) game I've ever played. Good shit... though the ending is kind of disturbing.

I played Doom, Quake 64, and own Golden Eye 007. My personal fav: Golden Eye.

Edit: I forgot to say, Unreal Tourney was my other fav as it got me into online gaming and is 1000x better than halo in my opinion.
