Ok, so my optical drive is giving me a "D:\ not accessible incorrect function" error, and I've tried all the things I've seen with google searches for the error. I think it had something to do with the install of MagicDisk I had installed (worse than even daemon tools for your computer, never install it), so I installed the trial version of Driver Detective. It told me that these drivers are out of date or missing:

Quote
(2) Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
PCI Simple Communications Controller <--missing
REALTEK High Definition Audio

I'm guessing the one that's causing the error is the PCI IDE Controller. Am I right?

Unfortunately, the trial wouldn't let me update the drivers. And I searched for the driver and found nothing. So does anyone have a freeware driver scanner, or can provide the driver I need?

Or if that's not the problem, can someone tell me what to do (short of reinstalling windows, not really a VIABLE option for me).

Your motherboard manufacturer's site should have them included in the chipset drivers there.

Additionally, check that when your right click the drive and select properties, and goto the recording tab, that "Enable CD recording on this drive" is enabled. I think only XP Home has that option.

Does the drive work in safe mode?

I haven't tried safe mode. I'll grab the drivers first, then if it doesn't work I'll try safemode. It only gives me the error with a blank disk in, though. I can boot into ubuntu and burn disks and play them on windows, but I can't burn directly from windows.

I'm using professional, and I don't have the recording tab.

EDIT: Safe mode no-go, and my computer's an emachines from two years' back, and their support is shite. Am I fucked?

Not the people who put together your computer, the people who manufactured your motherboard. All that premade PCs are composed of is just on-the-shelf parts slapped together for you with an OS and drivers installed. Open up your case and write down the motherboard model number (should be in largest letters near the center) and look it up on google to find out who makes it. Go to their site and use that model number to locate the drivers for your board.
