Well recently I have begun to develop a social conscience and I was trying to think of something cool I could do for charity, maybe something a little more personal than giving 1 dollar to some anonymous organisation, like I always thought it would be cool to write a letter to someone who is in prison (there is a organisation that does this for people who have been arrested because of their race I think) or maybe even just give a random street person some clothes.

Any ideas? Have you done anything similar?

Sweater drives are pretty easy to organize, but next to writing letters to prison I guess that sounds pretty lame.

"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

I thought of doing something like going trick or treating on Halloween and then since I don't eat candy at all I would donate it to a homeless shelter or something.  It would be cool but I think I'd much rather donate some other food that is actually good (lol) but I still might do it.

How about instead of some self-aggrandizing act of charity (oo I feel good about myself for helping the less fortunate) you focus on being a more compassionate and morally concerned person. That way you'll be nicer to people and you don't really have to do anything.

I dunno how things are in new zealand, but there's probably a food bank or homeless shelter somewhere. that's volunteer work rather than donating $ but it's all I've got! other than donating canned food in highschool and giving away my old clothes that are still in good shape, that's all I've ever done.

I love how people assume anyone who wants to do something for charity is just a selfish bastard out to make themselves feel good.

I didn't make that assumption, and I have no doubt that your concerns are socially motivated or that you have some altruistic empathy that you want to embody. I just think idk that being nice all the time is better than being good every so often. y'know we should all try and develop some of that unintentional and unconditional compassion that jesus was talking about

EDIT: rather than just going "here is some money or hello" you could like, idk become a role model for the children in your community by being really involved in the local soccer club and then help teens face tough issues so that by the end of season two there is some serious trouble with the law but Hernando gets bailed and to the game in time to score the winning point of the match

One time I was supposed to get tickets to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra for Christmas but I forfeited them and used the money to buy $100 in toys for poor kids in my community.  My dad and his girlfriend were so touched by the sentiment that they bought me a ticket anyway, so everyone was happy that year!

Writing letters to people in prison is not something I would probably ever do.  I mean, what is there to talk about?  HAI GUY HOW'S IT LIKE BEING A THREAT TO SOCIETY???

I would say volunteer at a mission somewhere and feed soup to the homeless people.  If you're good with kids then feed homeless children or something, I dunno.  Teach them how to play chess or carve wood or something.

Back in school junior high and high school we were forced to donate canned food and clothes. Appart from that... well:

Go to an adult daycare center and talk to old people. I used to do that... and it's cool sometimes.

Most churches have some sort of donation stuff. I've donated stuff there, like clothes, food and such. Here we have many facilities for "young mothers", and I've donated infants milk and clothes several times. Maybe you could donate such if you have a little brother, or stuff when you used to be a baby?

Maybe you sould consider donating blood. But be prepared fo the post dizzyness.

-Donate blood

-Write a letter to someone fighting overseas (not really charitable, but how is writing to someone in prison) There is some organizations, i cant remember one right now, where you can do this, along with sending a 'basket' of things for a soldier, like simple things that are luxury for them - even as simple as some candy and or christmas card (at the time). We did this at my church once.

i cant think of any more now but if i do later ill say

-Donate blood

This.

If you donate blood on regular intervals, you're almost guaranteed to save at least one persons life. It takes like twenty minutes and you'll only feel weak for a couple of hours at the most (and when you get used to it, even less).
