You guys are forgetting a little company I like to call Electronic Arts.  They could make their own console and stop releasing their games on everyone else's.

I can see Blizzard with a console.
Also, EA would not surprise me at all considering their success with sports games.

Obviously Sega would make a great comeback, but honestly it seems more likely they will go the route of companies like Rare, and be absored by one of the big 3.

Google would be a cool console, but I'm getting a little tired of hearing about the crazy new shit Google is building to take ALL INDUSTRIES.

If only Nintendo make a Gamecube portable and yes I would like to see SEGA back in the console wars they could pull it off I think...

I think three consoles is enough as it is right now. Seriously, what more do you want? (Apart from decent games...) There's barely enough room on the market for three consoles, unless all three do radically different things.

Although...I think Philips is ready to build on the momentum it gained with the CD-i...It would really blow Microsoft out of the water at this point...

1 - The PS3 hasn't sold bad, just bad compared to the other 2. Compared to other consoles etc, it has sold pretty decently.
2 - Sony has more than enough money to stay in the console business. (and seems to have no idea of leaving it any time soon)
3 - You don't "get knocked out" of it. Even when the Dreamcast got owned they still made games for it. (hell a couple games came out for it last year! (In Japan tho.))
3 - No company would hopefully be stupid enough to make a new console now. Maybe Sega but they already said they give up.

And lastly, I wouldn't pick a company to change their business or a company to make a new console anyways, because the industry sucks, is starting to get oversaturated, and isn't stable at all at the moment so ~.~. I wouldn't mind 2 console companies, (Wii, PS360). You'd have less porting times for those who port to PS3 + 360, which means more people dedicated to other projects, etc. But this ain't gonna happen so.

How? They make PC games, pretty much exclusively. What interest could they possibly have in making their own console? Besides, they have no experience at all with hardware! And they are a pretty small company!

I don't see why software companies like EA or Google would start making hardware. Some kind of joint project with Philips or something is much more probable. Or Apple (lol iGame lololol).

(MS being software developer when they made the Xbox doesn't affect this argument, since they make OS' (and directx))

That's not true they've had:
Lost Vikings 1
Lost Vikings 2
Rock and Roll Racing
Blackthorne
Death and Return of Superman
Justice League Task Force

And StarCraft: Ghost before it got canceled.

They barely have double the PC games, but they mostly produce for PC because it's their market, and they can build around a KB and mouse.

Also they have experience with hardware, they develop for PC afterall! Consoles now and days mostly use PC parts, anyways.

I think you slightly underestimate Blizzard. :P

Though they wouldn't make their own console imo, because they have no reason to. They are at the top of their world right now.

You know? As long as companies make quality games at an affordable price I'm in. It's not that I don't like the 360 or the PS3, they rock! Is just that I can't afford them, so I have a Wii. And the Wii is sucking balls at having some GAMES.

Back to the topic, I wouldn't care if some other console entered the market. But EA or Blizzard? Dude no way. Maybe Google or Macintosh, and again, as long as they have solid games it's all cool. :)

I think there should be a new Atari console.. Or ColecoVision 2.

That would be swell.

They getting pretty chummy with Nintendo, I think.

Sega won't ever get into the console business because they simply don't have the money anymore.  They totally fucked up with the Dreamcast because they built a console to compete with the Sony Playstation and the Nintendo 64, rather than the soon-to-be-released next-gen consoles.  It was the best console for about a year, but the PS2 and Gamecube were superior machines when they came out.

The Sega Genesis was the only console they got right, at least until they made all those crappy add-ons.

Google is the only company I could picture entering the console business, but even that seems unlikely.  I think they would rather make some kind of small portable PC capable of more than just games.  I'd love to see powerful portable PCs capable of high-definition gaming.

really, all games consoles do the same thing and games are released multiplatform all the time with very small differences between them. another big name corporate console isn't really necessary at all because all it would be is a new brand, and i know that video game idiots like to get religious fundamentalist about their gaming brands but that is stupid and nobody needs another console in their life.

i mean, unless some smaller developer with a focus on making something innovative could scrape the money together to do it but i dunno why they would or how they could when the whole business is about repeating formulas and making things flashier. the wii is a bit of an exception but it didn't innovate so much as expand their market by focusing on things which seem a little less videogamey to wives and gramps etc. and introduced a whole bunch of stupid peripherals. it's a different kind of console, yeah, but i think it's really a lot worse and less interesting than the ps3 and 360 just because of the whole focus of the console being on pick up and play mass market stuff. i'm just not interested in half-baked interactive sports games.

as for sega who cares they stink.

i don't even know if i think video games are capable of more than what they are now. i guess as long as they are just chunks of escapist or diversionary entertainment they won't be. there have been games which have been actually interesting but it wasn't on the merits of them being a game, it was the music or art design or some kind of vaguely literary aspect to them. on the other hand, maybe there really is something in the world building and exploring virtual environments but only a few games here and there attempt to explore what can be done with exploring that area and when they do they get lauded as absolute genius gaming revolution! when really all they done was not be awful.

so if google or whoever would do this was to come out and say "get ready for the next generation of cutting edge gaming..." i wouldn't really care.

sega - too many mistakes to make a console that won't run them out of business
bk - fake or not i played their games (shut up) and they turned out to be fairly decent, console would suck ass though
wikibox(?) - would be a good idea, like a current gen atari (everyone can make and market a game for the system as long as they can code it, i would buy this and it would be sweet)

i think with a better name and some power behind it something like that wikibox idea would be good, like i know the internet is already there but you wouldn't need to pay that outrageous internet bill at the end of every month to play this, you just pay for the console and buy the indie games for it. Maybe like atari some will become hits.
I'd like to think of myself, in a gaming team way, as a planner/director. I have everything written and in my head, but I can't code or sprite if my life depended on it.

What interest they had in consoles in the early 90s doesn't appear to exist today, however.

And developing for a platform is not the same as developing the platform!

but I have a hard time seeing any company besides the ones already in it starting to make consoles, anyway

Some sort of standardizing of PC gaming or perhaps a Mac gaming software platform (which wouldn't need to fight the system already in place like on PC (of course on PC it's more LACK of system)) would be pretty cool. Microsoft tried something with Live in Vista but stupidly tried to charge for it (impossible)...

ironically the sega genesis was designed specifically to compete with the NES but they used such a ridiculously powerful motherboard (motorola something or another) and a wicked sound chip that it managed to top the snes technically by sheer chance.

I doubt Barkley would ever be accepted to WiiWare but holy shit...if it ever was...I'd download it in a heartbeat.

i'm really surprised no one has mentioned APPLE, especially since their starting into the handheld gaming scene with the new iPhone. i really think they have the potential and the resources to enter in with a new console, and i think it'd probably do well (MUST BE TRENDY), so it really wouldn't surprise me at all if they came out with one in the near future.
