Decided to do a short news article today, since there isn't much else planned, and I'm taking a week off of Freeware Fridays...

In other news, Ubisoft, you know, that company that not only used the near universally hated StarForce in their products (they stopped using it in 2006 after a shit ton of complaints), banned EGM from reviewing their products because they got bad reviews, have also committed the ultimate hypocrisy ever.

That's right, Ubisoft, a company that has long since claimed that piracy was killing their sales, blaming it for their lack of sales on all of their products, and taken a long stand against piracy, has since issued an update to their game Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2 a while ago because the Direct2Drive version was having copyright issues.

The fix?

A No-CD crack by the piracy group "Reloaded".

Ubisoft, you are the most fucking annoying videogame company in the whole world. I don't care if there are companies out there that make legitimate worse games than you do, this is the dumbest shit I've seen since Limbo of the Lost. I bet no one even virus scanned or trojan scanned that No-CD fix. Also, your sales don't suck because of piracy, they suck because all of your games blow. The only good games you have that I can think of is Shadowbane which you fucked up by the way, and Rainbow Six Las Vegas, which OH YEAH you used a fix from a piracy group because you are too fucking lazy to do it yourselves. You removed the file, but left no explanation. You'll probably say Direct2Drive did it, or scapegoat them, or say some new guy used it, but that is bullshit because we all know you guys are just lazy and didn't want to fix your own game.

Enjoy discussing this one. It's short, but oh my god...Ubisoft what were you thinking.

I read about this earlier today and it was pretty hilarious. I even went and read some topic about this on Ubisoft's forums but unfortunately they weren't really trying to defend themselves. Apparently they already removed the fix and I suppose they are trying to cover it up now.

I know that's like the best part.

No explanation.

Maybe they just...I mean maybe they...an intern stole board passwords and went in as an admin and said to use a no-cd patch.

i'm surprised more video game companies haven't been discovered doing this kind of thing where they STEAL fixes/cracks from amateur teams of programmers...

all the time i hear in games where people have to use pirated versions / patches because there is some CD problem or something to this effect that prevents them from playing the retail game. however i never actually saw a company recommend that as the official fix. i'm willing to bet this was some GRUNT error but all the same it is still very hilarious.

I think Ubisoft are those guys that released a FREE SCRABBLE GAME FOR KIDS in a british newspaper (news of the world or something) that frequently brought up swear words as part of it's dictionary by the computer player. Parents complained because like, their kids would be playing COMPUTER SCRAPPLE FOR KIDS and the computer would be throwing out words like "cunt" and "fuck" and shit.

frack ubisoft.

man don't you just hate it when you're playing scrabble with like...someone's mom playing too and you get the letters to spell dongs but not only would they probably not count it but it would be inappropriate

that happened to be a while back and it was really frustrating

They didn't mess up heroes, 4 was pretty good?

--

The Ubi/EGM/1up ban wasn't because of just bad reviews, but apparently because they were thought to be biased against Ubi products. Plenty of other sites rated some badly and they didn't care.

There's a huge comparitive list of games around with metacritic scores, and theirs were consistently rated worse than most places + their opinions on those from other companies that matched the other review sites. In this case, Ubi made the right decision IMO - and it hasn't hurt their sales much either.

For example, here's something a guy who worked on AC posted to a gaming press board when AC's E3 previews talked about horrible controls. At the time it was one of the few negative press comments the game had received:

Quote
I'm friends with the guy who demoed to him (Because it wasn't a them, it was one guy). He wouldn't listen to anything the guy from Ubi said, he wouldn't even listen to a rundown of the basic controls, he just said "Give me the controller I want to play" and then pressed buttons like a retarded monkey without even having the faintest idea how they worked.

No. The original creators killed heroes of might and magic when they made part 4. Ubisoft resurrected the series and gave it a glossy makeover to boot.

Ubisoft does have some pretty shitty games but I have to point out No More Heroes. I really enjoyed it and if I'm not mistaken it got... better than Ubisoft-average reviews. Still though, sometimes I just don't understand this kind of shit. It's ridiculously unnecessary and makes them look really bad.

isn't ubisoft mostly a games publisher? so having an anti-piracy policy could be mostly to recruit game developers?
