Tell us what the game is about, features, etc. Assume I know nothing about Red Alert, and use it with stuff besides Wikipedia. Just because it is an old game doesn't give you an excuse to make a fairly unsubstantial topic. As an old game, I'm fairly sure it has LAN, right? That means Hamachi could work if so, which means torrenting could work (not that I would support this...;) ), but people aren't going to want to join you and possibly get it if they know nothing about it!

Ok ok here's the deal.

Red Alert 2 is one of the many sequels to Command and Conquer which originally made the RTS genre popular back in 1995. In this edition it's Allies vs Soviets, favouring technology and brute force respectively.

The general formula for a game is that you build a base from a starting unit (Mobile Construction Vehicle), whilst harvesting ore and oil to fund your efforts. You can then use the units which are balanced very well for an RTS (this is why RA2 is my fave) and assault your enemy.

The different maps act in different ways. Depending on where you are positioned or the terrain you may favour an airborne or navy assault or you could be old skool and send in 100s of soldiers and tanks (traditional kick arse method).

You can have custom maps with up to 8 players and it even runs fine if you have 1000 ping (back in 2000 we only had 56k modem in our house, now we have 20 meg).

Tactically it's all about speed and capturing resources which is just the same as any other RTS, the thing that makes RA2 stand out from the rest is that it is so well done. The units are fun to use and they are balanced.

I used to play this heaps but no doubt I'm god awful now. I have it somewhere at home though so I'll add you on MSN and if we're ever awake at the same time we can have a game.

The servers for this are still up? Interesting.



If you try playing with Hamachi though, good luck, last I knew it wasn't supported.

I have no money for Red Alert 3. When santa gets me that or fallout 3 I think I will play with you guys, otherwise that's me out on monetary grounds.

You can still buy it. At Target and Walmart they have like, all 6 Command & Conquer games for like $30 or something crazy like that. Command & Conquer, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, Generals, and something else I think.

I used to play Red Alert and Red Alert 2 so often. Man. Those games rock.
