Civilization 4's world builder.

Some people would say editing levels at any point during the game is going beyond the line.

I am not someone who belongs in that category.

That was the best part.  Playing the game, deciding it's not hard enough then surrounding yourself with barbarians and altering the landscape.  It was like playing God and playing leader in the same game.

The best editor I've seen is for any of the Trackmania games.  It's a racing game, but the tracks are hella fun to make.

Downloaded it today, damn it's fun making tracks for it!

My only problem is the end track piece has to touch the ground. It wouldn't validate my long track, just 'cause the finish was off the ground.

HELL YES. I have succeeded in making some of the hardest, most soul crushing tracks known to man. (Trackmania Nations is free through Steam, too)
I haven't spent a penny on Trackmania.  Their demos are pretty much full games.

I designed a really cool track where you fly over and between a shit load of blimps, through some pipes, and land back on the track.  The amount of air you get on jumps alone makes it one of the best racing games ever.

Huh?  I've never had that problem.  often have the end piece high up in the air so that I can go flying off the track at the end.

Lode Runner: The Legend Returns/The Mad Monks Revenge/Online has a decent level editor. You can find a link for it in the Freeware Funfest thread.

Unreal Tournament 2004 has an amazing level editor. Sure, UT3's is similar but the gameplay is just so much cooler in 2k4. If you want editing on the go, Megaman Powered Up is your answer. Sure the characters look deformed but the level editor is good and you can share your creations online and people are STILL creating and sharing maps!

Yeah me neither! Usually I have neither on the ground so that you can't drive backwards out of the start and through the finish the wrong way if I don't have checkpoints (like on ridiculous jump tracks).

My latest track has 4 loops in succession, all with hoops in them, another one after a bend, then another bend, then driving up one of those huge cabled decorations and down the other side, avoiding the blimp, then two super tunnel loops, a water jump and a ridiculous hairpin quarter pipe and over the finish line. Its name? LOOPZ BARKLEY

That sounds like a fucking awesome track, can you upload it for all of us trackmania players or something? I feel like playing something that hectic.

ZZT

Um.. What is ZZT? That website is horrible and it's hard to find information, screenshots, ANYTHING... So if it's so great, why don't you tell us a bit more about it rather than just posting a link?

Seriously, that link was TERRIBLE, and I don't get why anyone would use that when there's a wikipedia article that actually tells you what the fuck it is and has screenshots and everything.  It almost looked like a bad attempt at promoting a community than really suggesting this thing.

Now that I can actually see what it is though, it does look like a pretty neat thing.

Yeah. I should've posted the Wiki entry. My bad.

ZZT is great. I really reccomend you go download it, then go download some games for it under the featured games section of zzt.org. ZZT is very simple, but the graphics can actually be outstanding for ASCII. The editor has an entire object-oriented programming language which is easy to learn.

Or you could try the next thing up from ZZT, MegaZeux.

Newer versions and forums where you can get help on it are at www.digitalmzx.net
I prefer it over ZZT because it runs better, and I know a little on how to use Robotic (The coding system) effectively (Like drawing a HUD). MZX Is basically an upgraded and more advanced ZZT, and there are many games you can dl from the DigitalMZX site too.

EDIT: And just to add, if you want to look at an awesome game-in-progress for it, go to the Journals forum and look at Hive World.

Well I discovered my true problem with Trackmania: If I do a symettrical track, with 2 lanes and checkpoints across both, it means you have to go back to hit the checkpoints you missed.

Which makes my 1 lap symettry race a 2 lap one 'cause you have to do both paths, ohwell. I'll upload it in a few mins after getting a new time for it. Watch this post!

EDIT: Uploaded! It's symettrical in the sense that there are equal turns on the track, but one track starts out high and goes over the other section. The scenery is a bit bland, but oh well! My best time is 2:42:53 - The gold is 2:53:00 O_o

You can change gold / silver / bronze times in the objectives section on the editor! (and seriously play my track :D)
