Hello there!

I just wanted some opinions on this design, for the Warhammer Online guild I'm in.
I've tried to stick with black/darkgrey as main color, purple and white as the secondary colors. Should I use these more often, or is it enough to create a feeling of (don't know the word) connection between the different sections?
Maybe use purple at the footer?

This is just a layout in photoshop at the moment, and only one "page" has it's design ready.

Hehe.. The name, is not my doing! But thanks for pointing it out..

The statement that this looks like every other guild site, that absolutely does not ring true in my case. Most I've seen are som sort of free CMS templates, or something scribbled together with way to many styles and colors. This matters not however..

Well, thanks for replies anyway.

It "looks" good but on usability and design side it's pretty crappy. Lots of empty space, too much eye candy and the content is in the "background".

Definitely find a new font for the text. It looks so plain. Something similar to "the guild" and "game info" for the "test link text", and something not as fancy, but less of an eyesore for the main window text.

You should definitely be using a nice serif font like Palatino Linotype or Times New Roman for the main bulk of the readable text.  Palatino Linotype has PRETTY GOOD SUPPORT on Windows computers and Macs alike, and looks damned nice, and Times New Roman is on pretty much every machine I've ever seen, so yeah.

I'd recommend either finding a better font for the menu items or making custom images for each of them with the same font you're using for headers, at a smaller size, obviously.  With a nice hover effect to make it glow or something.  That's pretty popular on these sorts of designs, as far as I can tell.  You also might want to make it look like the slab it's on is popping up from the rest by making it lighter than the others.

Other than that, yeah, it looks pretty okay.  I think you should saturate the purples a little bit more if you want to make the connection better, though, but that should be pretty easy for you to fix.  Maybe add a few more purple highlights on some things (possibly even make the words glow purple when they do that aforementioned hover effect, even) to really hammer it in.  Subtle things like that would be best.

i think i probably disagree with iaman, the font you are using for the main text is fine, i am not big on serif fonts for the main text. Evidently no one else is either, because how many sites do you see that use such a font?
fuck it all, dd is dead

Serif fonts are really only bad if you're using them at a small size.  At medium or large-size (the bulk of his text right now is a healthy medium size) they render perfectly fine and are very readable.

Also, to answer your question of how many sites use serif fonts, the answer is that NOT A TON DO, yeah, but there are some notable examples.  For instance, Craigslist, Wordpress, and The Sartorialist all use it, to a pretty nice effect.  THE AGE OF SANS-SERIF FONTS REIGNING OVER THEIR SERIF BRETHREN IS NEAR ITS END.

Serif fonts always seemed a bit more classy to me, idk. They'd go really well with your design, too. I'd say go with them!

traditionally serif fonts are harder to read on-screen, whereas sans-serif fonts are easier. the opposite is true for printed materials.

but yeah if you are gonna go with a serif font, it needs to be like 14pt or higher, otherwise it'll look shitty. 12pt Times is awful on-screen, 16pt is not so bad.
