You should check out The Decalogue - it's a series of 10 short films (each around 45 minutes long) in Polish, with each film drawing inspiration from one of the 10 commandments. It's a masterpiece. (It's up in the Zoo as well)!

Another thing you could do is get a list of all the films that won the Oscar for best picture and then watch them all. Some people actually have this as a life goal.

And nominated for Best Picture, yeah, because Crash won that one year lol or watch those that won or got nominated for Best Screenplay (these are usually very good).

honestly all i remember about crash was how it started out with a bunch of dumb one-dimensional racists and then gradually delved deeper into their characters.  i don't remember anything about it being very OFFENSIVE maybe i missed something??

I never got what was so special about Casablanca, maybe im just too dumb to get it.

Like I read once in a magazine that it was gonna be aired on one of the weird free channels we have and I was like yeah its Casablanca everyone says its gr8 and then I watched it and... it was just... I don't know. It was really boring and afterwards I felt like I just wasted a few hours watching that shit.

EDIT:
If you're into westerns at all then besides all the Eastwood flicks theres also Once Upon A Time In The West which is really great, imo, and it has spawned its share of BEST MOVI EVAR opinions. I don't know how important movies westerns are considered but there you go, check it out if you haven't already.

I took a drama class where we basically watched a lot of the "basics" I guess.

These are the films I remember that I don't think has been mentioned yet: Psycho, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Graduate, Rain Man, It's a Wonderful Life, The Sting... that's about all I can remember that's not been mentioned yet.

I don't know too much about film and whatnot but the class pretty much centered around the classics. I remember watching Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and really liking that one, too. I guess that's just taste, though. I'm a sucker for sappy stuff sometimes =(

Also China Town. That's a good noir film.

yeah I've been meaning to catch up on the classics. I should really watch some bogart! people please start recommending some movies I (not psyburn) would like, thanks.

list of movies on my comp:
Blue Velvet
Breathless
City of God
Chinatown
Eraserhead
Fargo
Mulholland Drive
Tank Girl

Take It oR Leave It

Most of them are pretty important, I think I spotted all of them on a list of culturally significant movies or something. I did not appreciate Breathless beyond Jean Seberg and her v short hair, but the rest are good and relatively important. I don't feel like writing about each of them, ask if you want a GWer opinion of any of the films.

Breathless pretty much started, or at least helped start the French New Wave, which in turn influenced the early American independent film makers.  Breathless also broke a lot of rules and set a standard of filming that a lot of movies followed.  As cliche as it is now, the jump cut was a crazy and I guess REVOLUTIONARY technique that was introduced in Breathless.  Breathless is a very significant movie, guys!

Just so you know.

Add these 2 to your list if you haven't seen them yet:

Memento - Amazing film, awesome execution, and really mind-bending.
TRON - One of the first films to use CGI extensively. It may not be the best film ever, but it is iconic and pretty memorable.
