ok now in return someone can help me with my assignment, i just need a recent news article to relate to:
buddhist fundamentalism and violence in sri lanka
or
islamic fundamentalism as a response to US foreign policy in the middle east
or
the relationship between islamic fundamentalism and terrorism
or
a new christian religious movement
or
new religious movement from an asian tradition

i don't watch the news and it has to be from within the last 6 months (3 months for the US policy one)

don't know if this will work but Sarah Palin is a fundamentalist christian and was chosen as mccains VP

and uhh the USA just sent troops to pakistan to attack terrorists or whatever

"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

ok then suggest ideas!
i have a really short essay (1200 words) on the relationship between islamic fundamentalism and terrorism. i've got a horrible headache and i feel really ill, so if someone could give me some points for words that'd be cool.
eg: islam is the party religion and this encourages new recruits

you can talk about how crazy fundies are a relatively new thing, and how radical islam emerged as a failure of the left to deal with living standards.

Well the Khomeini regime (of Islamic Fundamentalism) of Iran called for criminal acts and even accepted responsibility for acts of terrorism, so it was a government supported type thing...hmm.

And other than just encouraging recruits it is the main thing that drives people to martyrdom and things such as that. The whole part about dying and going to Allah and all that is pretty much the driving force. I know I'm not describing shit really, just generalizing but yeah haha. You probably already are putting something about that in though.

What kind of fallacy is committed by each of  the following statements:
9. "It's no wonder the crime rate has shot up. The state legislature voted to lower the drinking age."
10. "English should be the official language of the United States, and anybody who doesn't like it can leave."

Your first answer's correct, the second one's a false dilemma. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_dilemma

that makes sense, but it's not onthe list of fallacies we're supposed to have learned about! wow, that's dumb. I might use it anyway because I can't see any of the others working.

it seems more like it'd be ignoratio elenchi to me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignoratio_elenchi

I doubt it's one of the ones you're supposed to know.

Ignoratio elenchi bears resemblance to the false dilemma, but the difference is that it uses some (possibly valid) conclusion that does not address the issue at hand.  An example would be "All these immigrants comes from Mexico and speak Spanish.  They're clearly causing our economy to slip."  This is ignoratio elenchi because the qualities of speaking Spanish or being from Mexico in itself are not valid reasons or explanations for causing a slipping economy.

It's kind of strange that you haven't yet had to learn the false dilemma, earl clip, because I'd say this is a pretty nice textbook example.

if you're talking about why the professor didn't include that in the reading we were supposed to do prior to answering these questions...........well I dont want to say anything that could get me in trouble but he is

if you're wondering why I didn't know what that was called, I dunno. I took 2 english/writing courses in my last college and they both covered other stuff. being able to identify faulty arguments and spot a fallacy is one thing (the important one)
