I'm sure we've all been there. No, let me rephrase that. I'm sure we've all done it.

At some point during our sleepless hours of controller-tapping we've come across points in games that have us gritting our teeth because we REFUSE to look up strategy guides or online FAQs. That's when we pull out the gamer's instinct and our senses and intelligence get a sudden boost(some by Mountain Dew, some by cocaine) until we play our way out of that ridiculous situation that has you wondering at the end, "What the hell were they thinking when they made this game?!"

But it had you so frustrated or your mind in such a bind that your gamer instinct forces you to never forget it.

So what strategies or problems that you've encountered in a game(s) that have been etched in your membrane??

1) I, for one, will never forget that at on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island at the Potted Ghost's Castle the key to the next section of the castle is hidden in a spikeball in the far right corner of the same room that has the locked door. Thank you Nintendo, I will never get the hour back I spent looking for that damn key.

2) How about WizPig from Diddy Kong Racing?? Yeah, he pissed me off enough to beam my controller at the N64. So thanks to that experience I will always remember to use the super boost(the that gives you green fire) because thats literally the only way to beat him.

But enough of my traumas, what are yours??

PRETTY MUCH THIS.  Anyone who says the Speed Bike part has evidently never gotten past it.  Really the only way to beat it is to memorize it.

I'm sure I've had times like those, but I really can't remember any.

Perhaps 3-4-5 years ago when I began playing Devil May Cry, I guess.

I remember that we managed to beat the speed bike part but always with about one life left so all we saw of the following level was... very little. Damn that game's first level was so fun. Too bad they botched it up like that...

I have some vague memories of Bionic Commando and also Snake Rattle 'n Roll. But I can't remember the exact areas I never got past.

Hoshigami.... FUCKING HOSHIGAMI!

Worst strategy RPG I have ever played. It's been several years since I played it, and I made an effort to erase all memories I had of that game (breaking the CD up and then burning it to a crisp is proof of this), so I will let this guy explain the horrid game instead: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/review/R34261.html

I will never forget that one of the skeletons in La Mulana is, in fact, not a skeleton, but a pedestal you need to put a weight on.

Or that there is an invisible ladder in that one room.

I think trying to beat the author time on some trackmania tracks gave me a minor stroke. Now I look permanently surprised.

A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

And on that note, 90% of missions in GTA Vice City Stories. You know what? FUCK gta. Most fucking pathetic missions ever (pappy dont cry) and if I meet the developers, I'll do a driveby on THEM.

Too many parts of Illusion of Gaia, simply because the game is a mind-fuck action/puzzler/rpg game to begin with.

Oh oh oh! Megaman 1, Elec Man if you don't have cutman's weapon.

His attack is instant, has a huge hitbox and kills you in 3 hits! And he takes like 20 hits to kill and is really fast! What the FUCK?

You know, this happened to me when I was just casually playing through the series and it was one of the few places where I really had to abuse save states because he can 3-shot you and sometimes you think you are above the attack when you are standing on the platform but guess again you are not BOOM 1/3 of hp gone.

But it wasn't as gay as the HYPNO DISC RACE level in battletoads like holy shit, I had to savestate through the entire game after level 3 and there's like 20 levels. The hypno disc race level is iirc the second to last level in the game and you can't beat it even WITH savestates. There's no time to even use them and even if you would you would lose that 0.01 seconds in reactiontime which is the marginal for error in that stage.

Had to use FCEU speedrun to get me past that level (watched it until he was through the level then stopped the speedrun and picked up where the speedrun left off).

I will never forget from The 7th Guest (I guess that's a spoiler because it's the solution to a puzzle).
