I am getting pretty close to the end of this game and I love it so much.  Dragon Quest games are the best.

Is anyone else still playing it?

Man that took me like 10 minutes or so tops.

It is a cruel trick though that the one merchant offers to buy your armor from you in the previous town so you (like me) probably had sold all of your iron armors immediately before you needed them.

My shop has like 30 steel swords (this is isn't even an exaggeration) but for whatever cruel reason NO ONE is dropping iron armor.  I have 2 left to go *sigh*

If I recall the best place to get them is in the cave by the castle.

EDIT: Hahah I just realized how much that statement can refer to like . . . any DQ game ever.

Can you buy iron armor anywhere?

no you can't buy it at this stage in the game which is why it's so frustrating.  torneko has some sort of passive ability that makes ALL enemies drop rare items so it's a matter of getting lucky (kind of like fighting abominable showman FFFFFFFFFf).

The general consensus on Dragon Quest is that you either hate the entire series with every fiber of your being OR you love it like it's your own child.

There's no middle ground.  Seriously.

This. I didn't notice this thread 2 weeks ago, and the game looks as bland and outdated as every other DQ. 8)

I'm also trying to get those Steel Swords and Iron Armor arg..... I also wanna get 60000 gold coins to pay that old dude in the tunnel. So far I really like the game but is it just me or this isn't as hard as other DQ games?

You automatically get 60,000 coins once you give the king all of his equipment (talk about overpaying).  As far as the difficulty it's about average as far as DQ games go.  The game seems to be really liberal with money (unlike in every other DQ game where cash flow is soooo limited and items are soooo expensive) but every once in a while you run across a huge group of powerful monsters that tear through your defenses.  You really have to spam all of your spells like buff and sap and I actually found myself using snooze and stuff.

It's not that bad of a grind in this one except that in chapter three you have to find 6 iron armour and 6 steel broadsword and the only way to find them is by fighting a lot of monsters.

The introductory chapters are all pretty easy, but they are less than the first half of the game.  It gets more difficult once you hit the real meat of the game (for example you fight no real bosses until chapter 5).  I have had some intense boss fights where I have to cast heal twice per round as well as stack buffs/debuffs and even then I win by the seat of my pants.

I can't wait for chapter 5, I'm currently on chapter 4 and finding this chapter a little boring compared to the other ones.

i dunno i'm 30 hours in and abominable showman was STILL my hardest boss.  it's not really difficult but i had terrible terrible luck fighting him.

for that those that don't know, he creates three duplicates of himself and you have to strike the right one.  to make matters worse, you fight him with one character.  he's not strong but his duplicates are completely random.  sometimes there would be a pattern where he'd attack from the same spot 5-6 times in a row but sure enough when you target that enemy he ends up in another one.

i just targeted a single clone and prayed i hit the right one.  5 tries later (the guy and all the battles before seriously took up all of my healing items) i finally killed him.
