From what's been released so far, if someone has to run TF2 on really really low / use -dxlevel 80, they might not be able to play L4D. While it uses a similar engine, the advanced AI and shaders and such used in the game to give it its distinct movie-esque feel is going to really affect the specs for the lower end PCs that might be able to run TF2. Anyone who can run it modestly or on high has nothing to worry about though.
The shaders and will be able to be lowered (possibly even compatible with -dxlevel 80 parameter) for lower spec systems, and the AI will only be processed on the server computer (unless you want to play it alone, haha). We can't really say what improvements or optimizations they've made to the engine besides the ones they've announced, I'm surprised by every new iteration of the HL2 engine and it will no doubt be so close to the other games that use the current version, that >95% of people running them playably are going to have no issue running L4D even IF its slower (cause it won't be by that much).

I agree with all this (and yes I will be at the forefront shooting zombies in the face soon), but the name is just so shit. It's kinda funny the first time (sorta, not in a 'lol' way - more a 'oh. THATS gw?'), but it just totally defeats the purpose. NOBODY knows what the fuck it is, even at Gaming World, unless someone specifically tells them. If someone goes looking for 'our' group on steam they're gonna see this and ignore it.

My steam name is strafedemon and i'll probably join the group later.

I haven't played steam games in a while, but I used to play TF2 a bit as well as Garry's Mod.
Left4Dead looks pretty awesome, so I might play that when it comes out(if my PC can handle it - it handles TF2 quite well.)

I have Insurgency, the Ship, and HLM. I'll join the group if I ever get on a computer that can play those games. I'd really like to play the ship with people I know but that's not going to happen

Some of us played the ship (I think the HL1 version) awhile back when we were also playing Science and Industry. It was pretty fun for a short while

Also I'd definitely play Insurgency Mod

The Left4Dead specs have been updated, by the way.

You only need a 128MB video card now.

By the way, zombie matches on Garry's mod really rule!

By the way, zombie matches on Garry's mod really rule!

But they are way easy. You can spawn 100 fast zombies around you and take them all down without taking a single point of damage. Also if they are too far away from you they just get bored and give up. I put myself in a cage for safety and spawned as many fast zombies as I could expecting them to bombard the cage but they didn't. They couldn't immediately reach me so they just walked around aimlessly.

I've never really played Garry's Mod but I think I bought it or I have it from somewhere or something.

You should add Trackmania to that list because I know quite a few people enjoy it from the old GW group.

So I ordered L4D yesterday (a physical copy, not through Steam) so if my comp runs it at all I'll be playing dat with dem gwers.

They announced that the DEMO is available to all who pre-ordered through steam on 6th and everyone else gets a taste of it at 11th.

I've heard the game is pretty fun and filled with a variety of effects that change the experience every time. Unfortunately I've also been hearing mixed opinions on the matchmaking service which they pretty much are forcing players to use in the demo. I'm hoping since this is just the demo that they will change it, but how is it working out for you all?

Bad things I have heard:
1. You are forced to use the matchmaking service which has a cheap consolish appearance, not something more akin to PC like a server browser (apparently there's some console command that brings up the server browser)
2. It randomly assigns you players from outside your country. You can be in the U.S. and end up having players from Germany or Australia
3. No dedicated servers for matchmaking. Instead you play off of somebody else's computer. It's going to be great playing on some guy's 512k upstream

How is the friends play lobby? Does it just randomly assign you to some of your friends, or can you at least choose who you want to play with?

There is a host and you invite people to games. Also it is really bad, the only game I have been able to connect to so far is goat's and when he left I haven't been able to play because I cannot connect to anyone else apparently.

Yeah that's a really bad thing they did, I don't know why they even did it. They didn't do that with the TF2 demo did they? It's ridiculous, I really do hope they fix that.

I am really interested in how versus mode is. I don't know why they didn't include that in the demo. It feels weird that PC users basically get something that feels like it was from the Xbox live marketplace. It feels like Valve didn't want to short change the 360 owners, so they cut out stuff for us PC users since demos on the marketplace never have the full content. The whole experience feels very consolish, I don't remember TF2 doing that at all.

But the game is very enjoyable, especially with friends. It's a shame there isn't enough content to really get a grasp of how good things could be.

I dunno about all this L4D, I should be insanely excited as me and my friends have always wanted a co-op zombie killing game but I'm not really excited. Guess I'm just waiting til I see it in action or get a new motherboard so I can install my new 3d card! Plus I want a 360 so I dunno if I wanna spend the money.

Anyways guys, it's out like, tomorrow in the US? So let us know it goes.

I still fucking love TF2, just for the record. Probably the best team based online shooter I've ever played.
