I watched Pontypool despite the 'meh' ratings (54 on metacritic) HOLY SHIT. WATCH THIS MOVIE. I can't tell you what its about other than that is vaguely post apocalyptic. That is what I knew going into the movie and MAN it was good knowing only that. If you watch a trailer its likely to give it away.
who cares wut metacritic or rottentomatoes thinks
amazing

traffic was pretty awesome. i haven't seen a lot of older movies but luckily my brother has all these movies (esp. ones that have won academy awards). i'm kinda playing catchup slowly.

we watched The Long Green Line (http://www.hulu.com/watch/125305/the-long-green-line) which is like a documentary about a high school track team coached by some track legend or something. it was pretty good as far as documentaries go. i'm not a better person for having watched it.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?

Surrogates. Bruce Willis's acting was the one of the only things redeemable. And the concept was ok.

But it seemed kind of like a movie for Luddites.

Damn no one else watching movies?

I just watched 2012 for the first time. It was totally unrealistic in to many ways to discuss. but it was entertaining enough.

It was better than The Day After Tomorrow, but that's not exactly a feat.

i watched kings and queen (rois et reine) which was a movie released about 5 years ago and it is about this woman who's dad is dying and her estranged husband who is in a mental hospital. it was entertaining but there were flashes of mainstream humour crap which gave it away a bit. plus, i'm getting a bit bored with watching rich french people having mental problems. i think about 80% of the french films i have seen involve a rich person going to a mental hospital at some point because they can't handle the issue of existence any longer.

here's the trailer:

oh, sugar. i posted the wrong video. what a blooper.

actually this trailer is kind of terrible. i mean the film is sentimental and a bit cheesey but it's nowhere near as bad as this trailer makes it out to be. it is directed by Arnaud Desplechin and i have no idea who he is apart from the director of this film, and it's got people like matthieu amalric and catherine deneuve in it so...it's a heavyweight, understand? it's a fucking heavyweight.

as far as i can tell, french cinema is overrated as being particularly artistic or insightful. i mean maybe this is an obvious thing to say, but it's just as dumb as anywhere else. it's just dumb in different ways from hollywood. there is racism and sexism everywhere in these films, not blatant but just untreated (although kings and queen isn't really an example of that), and so much of the classics are just really fucking middle class dramas. that doesn't make them bad movies but i can't help but laugh at the gravity of these stories a little when really all they are dealing with is an affair or whatever.

anyone else seen rois et reine? what did you think?

I'm a film dunce and don't watch anything but from what you were saying about HEAVYWEIGHT and also from the trailer it looks like the french equivalent of oscar-bait or something, right down to the Randy Newman soundtrack and pictures of people hugging. I have no idea what its reputation is but maybe it's just that generic middlebrow stuff gets a better reception if it comes from that context of cinemaphile french people etc? aaaa i feel like jojoface. I think if you're looking for acclaimed stuff you're always gonna have to wade through a lot of uh worthy shit anyway.

I watched some of 'Predator' last night and Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice kept reminding me of Tommy Wiseau, this increased my enjoyment tenfold and also really highlighted how ridiculous a lot of things about it were (that handshake holy shit). Weah a wescue team, naht assahssins! This could be a new way to watch this stuff.

Just watched Dances with Wolves...one of my favorite movies.  Saw it (or at least some of it) when I was pretty young and didn't remember any of it...like that it was 4 hours long lol.

I saw Shutter Island tonight, didn't like it.

I'm interested in hearing what anybody else thought though. I couldn't help but feel like it was completely predictable until the ending where they kind of denounce the "plot twist" with ambiguity.

That said, I thought all of the lead actors did amazing jobs!

I watched Towelhead last night. It had a very strong approach to a unique idea and had its moments. Watch it if you don't have anything to do. Don't expect an understandable ending though.
