watched the first episode of weeds, it was awful. it's like every other showtime or HBO show I've seen in that you have to find something about the premise really really interesting or funny, or just like staring at the TV, in order to be amused by it at all. actually in that sense it's very similar to that new NBC show called Outsourced. don't tell me stick with it it gets better because I'm not going to watch any more episodes. the first episode already highlightedenough uncomfortable subjects with the promise of drama just like every episode of THE L WORD to tell me it's not worth it. it's probably the worst show I've seen that isn't incredibly dumb by design like big bang theory or friends

weeds is a really irritating and crappy show (and apparently the quality has dipped off substantially from even the crumby first couple of seasons). it took me a while to like breaking bad because of weeds, because the start of breaking bad really isn't much better than weeds. breaking bad keeps that dumb desperate housewives level of humour for a couple of episodes in season 1. it's been a while since i watched any of breaking bad apart from the first episode of season 1 which i watched a couple of weeks ago (and i didn't really like it. i didn't like it much when i first saw it either but i heard it GOT really good later), so i can't remember how bullshitty seasons 2 and 3 actually are.

I watched "Forbidden Zone" last night and enjoyed it a lot. I think Vellfire made a topic about it in Tomatoland a while back but I only got around to checking it out now. It's like a low-budget thirties musical comedy adaptation of a Robert Crumb comic with cardboard backdrops and a family called Hercules voyaging through the Sixth Dimension and people awkwardly lipsynching to old songs. Some of it's kind of selfconsiously "out there" but most of it is pretty funny and I liked it!

I watched the first season of Breaking Bad a whle back and enjoyed it although I suspected it would get "Dexteritis" (not an accepted medical term) quickly enough and exhaust a cute concept and end up wasting time on secondary characters noone cares about. There was some of this in the first season I think but I enjoyed it anyway. I don't remember exactly what I liked about it though.

In terms of other TV shows I watched the first season of Justified a while back and thought it was great. I suspect this will be minority opinion here (gw hivemind....) because it's definitely a GENRE PIECE cop show in a lot of ways and doesn't really try to be anything more but I thought it was charming and fun. It's basically the tv equivalent of an Elmore Leonard (it's based on some of his books) or Joe Lansdale book which are kind of ambling laid-back southern thrillers and I have no real problem with that!

Yeah I did (I reposted it on my blog here if anyone else wants to read it).  It's absolutely fantastic, I'm hoping to get the DVD soon because I'm interested in seeing the digitally colored version of it.

I haven't seen breaking bad in a while either but jamie's comments sound harsh. I really liked it for a while, then it got boring in the middle of season 2 and barely picked up later. no way the bb pilot is as bad as the first episode of weeds. I get what you mean about desperate housewives humor but in the case of breaking bad I think it's easier to overlook as 'things that are happening' vs. intyresting garbage with doop doop doop music being played

I'm getting ready to watch the wire over christmas break. I will try to get into it but I'm pretty sure it's going to be the worst show ever 99 white guys scream in outrage
edit how many times do I have to press enter to get a new line now

By the way thecatamites (and whoever else) check this out:  cannot wait to get youtube tag back

It's a v. sweet Forbidden Zone piano medley.  He also did a piano version of Squeezit the Moocher but I could listen to this medley over and over.

I saw Love and Other Drugs the other night.  It's a pretty decent date movie, actually.

And I recently have been enjoying Season 5 of How I Met Your Mother and Season 3 of Chuck on DVD/blu-ray.

Tron: Legacy.

Critics can go fuck them selves on this one. One of the best movies I've seen.

Up there with my other 2 favorite Sci-Fi movies. The Matrix (what sequels?) and District 9.

I'm seeing Tron Legacy tonight, it will be the first movie I see this year.  I am hella excited.

edit: Wow I didn't know it was getting such lackluster reviews.  Every actual person I've heard that has seen it enjoyed it a lot.  Also lol at this:

"For a far more thought-provoking tale about the virtual realm, try The Social Network."

Ahaha what the heck lady???  Who the fuck goes into Tron a) expecting a thought provoking tale about the virtual realm and b) expecting anything like The Social Network?  HMM I WAS KIND OF HOPING FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOFTWARE AND LESS LIGHT CYCLE RACES...WHAT A LET DOWN...

I disagree that it was an AMAZING movie that was great across the board like a lot of people have said. It had its good points and bad points. I do, however, totally disagree with all the critics bashing it because it isn't another Casablanca.

In no way does Tron Legacy stand up there with recent Sci-Fi masterpieces like Avatar, films that manage to craftily blend stunning visuals with compelling storytelling and deep political insight. don't read reviews gang unless it's just to find out oh this is what the dummies are saying about this

I watched Point Blank last night. It's a 1967 thriller starring Lee Marvin. I enjoyed it, it was kind of a weird mix of uh sixties european artmovies and film noir and the overall effect was kind of a metallic-grey psychedelica, just this constant interplay of concrete buildings and mirrors and suits and sudden details. It's kind of like the Robert Altman version of Kiss Me Deadly in that it's like a disoriented version of a generic thriller plot. Like Lee Marvin gets betrayed by a friend and stomps around trying to get his money back and hitting people and stuff but whenever anyone asks what he'll do with the money or what he actually wants he just kind of slumps down into this childlike catatonic torpor until it's time to punch people on reflex action again. The end of the film has him finally gettiing his money and a chance at a good job for a crime syndicate etc but he just lurks in the shadows the whole time looking surly until everyone else gives up and goes home. It's kind of a weird film in that I was kind of dreading an awkward pasting of new-wave techniques onto a generic thriller or thriller techniquies onto a generic new-wave film but it ended up being this strange feverish thing inbetween. Like a DREAM of a thriller where the fundament is gone and all then characters just sort of float there before continuing what they've always done. I liked it though. (drunkpost so ignore typoes!!)

Like others, I saw Tron Legacy (in 3D) the other night (midnight release on Thursday), and I really enjoyed it.  I felt the 3D was very subtle, but it wasn't overkill, nor did it feel really gimmicky.  Probably the first movie I've seen that's taken advantage of the technology to make it feel like you're immersed in the movie world.

You're being sarcastic/not serious here right?

Avatar's story was shit. I didn't give a fuck about the characters, the plot was trite and very predictable, the villains were comical cardboard cutouts, the dialogue had me rolling my eyes consistently. Ugh it was so terrible. The only redeeming qualities were that the actors weren't bad and the 3D was purty dur hur.
