watched lynch's
inland empire. disappointed how much i disliked it. normally i find lynch to be, at worst, disturbing, but i couldn't really squeeze anything out of this movie. the atmosphere wandered past me, not really committed to doing anything, and i didn't find much joy in trying to piece together the puzzle of the whole thing. it felt like he was going for something a little more kafkaesque than usual, but failed pretty miserably by neglecting to make the events particularly gripping or poignant, short of a brief selection of moments scattered throughout. i think he went too far with this one, didn't have a strong enough central concept or peripheral ideas to strengthen anything that was going on.
neat idea though, making this total disjointed trainwreck of a movie that you need to figure out yourself. that's dangerous, though, as this sort of story structure relies heavily on the individual parts being strong independently of the greater sum of the work, which i don't feel like he really did here. a couple times he almost got it right, but i found too much of the actual events in the movie disinterested and meaningless, not really possessing strong enough images or concepts to really work. i'm pretty patient with stuff like this, usually able to latch onto something unique about it, but i just found this one bothersome and exhausting.
makes me feel like lynch may just be done as a feature-length filmmaker.
