I've been watching a few of these "mumblecore" movies recently. They are kind of the anti-movie in the sense they don't have tight structures or plots that go somewhere. They have elements of Neo-realism, basically teenagers and twenty somethings talking, trying to find out what its all about. It's not as pretentious as it might sound.
Included: Dance Party USA (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497351/), Quiet City (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0914382/), both by Aaron Katz. Both were pretty interesting. Mutual Appreciation (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446747/), has been my favorite so far, this one directed by Andrew Bujalski. I'm going to watch his first film, Funny Ha Ha, which is kind of considered the first mumblecore film ever made.
I also watched Hana & Alice (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407851/), a film directed Shunji Iwai, some of you might know him because he directed All About Lily Chou Chou, which I remember seeing some praise for in this forum once. It's pretty good, not on par with Lily Chou Chou, but it definitely has the same kind of feel, so if you liked the cinematography and music and montage style in Lily Chou Chou, you'll probably appreciate Hana & Alice.
All of these are on Netflix btw.
