I've heard about this, and while it's potentially promising, it's still very rough around the edges and it needs years of research before anything remotely viable in a mass effecting way comes out of it. Still though, it's very interesting.

I also think 'world goes fucking nuts' is overstating it by quite a bit.

I dunno, my big concern with this is that, as far as I can tell, the mutation makes it so that the white blood cells don't grow these CCR5 things.  I don't know how well science understands what exactly they do, though, and I feel like there is a lot of potential for a lot of other things to go wrong if they don't extensively test this to make sure it isn't potentially worse.

the HIV virus is known for mutating a lot, so even if this were true, it would need a lot more research and tests before we actually see it. I would love to get my hopes high for this, but I've been dissapointed too many times by supposed cures who were almost going to make it, then a few years of silence, and then it fails... I hope this time it's different, because I know lots of people with HIV and I would love for them to have a cure before anything happens to them.

Yeah, this kind of got me thinking... we need to destroy this virus, not find a way to make it not work on us. It will evolve, and the only way of knowing for sure that we've assessed the problem is to get rid of it completely.

I mean this is a step in the right direction and I'll always welcome that, but we need to get rid of HIV permanently.

You mean destroy the virus completely with some type of cure or do you mean kill everyone with hiv so no one can ever be effected by it again?

Have any of you guys actually read the article?

The process kills up to 30% or more of all patients and also makes patients much more susceptible to various *other* deadly diseases.  This is an extremely promising first step, but it's too early to get excited yet!
