This guy is my distant uncle.  He was running for U.S. Senate for the GOP in Alaska.  He wasn't a very likely candidate (just look at the activity on his blog, for example).

Basically, what I want to know is how you feel about him and his perspective on the issues, even if there is very little actual material to go by (he seems to have two sites, one here and another here).  If you've been following my posts here, you can probably figure out how I feel about it, but I mostly want someone from America to give his view on things.  Also because I'm planning on visiting him someday.

Here's some more info: http://www.ontheissues.org/senate/Rick_Sikma.htm , http://www.godvoter.com/rick-sikma-alaska.htm and http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Rick_Sikma

Yes, I believe prayer should be allowed in public schools.  Our children need serious help, and the statistics
speak for themselves.  Since 1962 when prayer was removed, the rise in teen pregnancy, STD’s, drop outs,
drug use, and kids shooting kids has risen out of control to the detriment of our society today.

I think this automatically means he is ridiculous.  It's not like society itself was hardcore shifting in the 60s, oh no, it's because prayer was removed from schools.

Yeah, I know.  That's probably the most inane thing on the page.  I'm not going to stop there, though.  I want some perspective from an American on what type of people would hold these views.

Environmentalists
believe that the we were made for the world. Conservationalists believe that the world was made for us.

sikma family reunion gonna be hella awkward.

ugh fucking ANWR too this guy's a real winner. basic by the books conservative other than his Iraq position, and even conservatives are admitting that's a wash by and large.

it's alaska though so that degree of ridiculousness is acceptable, right?

evangelist, thinks the salt water engine is really neat, i don't know he just seems like an uncle running for senate. i am pretty sure that alaska is the most conservative state but there are probably loads of people with similarly conservative views who have more polished campaigns or are better-known.

We actually already met.  It's kind of an interesting story, and I'm not sure if I've told it yet.  On September 10th, 2001, he was on his way back to America from mission work in Africa.  My dad, who was at the time investigating the extent of our family tree, found out about him and sent him an e-mail.  Turns out he was going to make a landing at Schiphol Airport before flying back to Alaska.  My dad had work, however, so the elusive meeting between them could not take place.

Since I mentioned the date September 10th, you probably know where I'm going with this.  When he went home a day later, his plane was turned around and sent back to the Netherlands because of the WTC attacks.  He was all alone in a country he had never been in and decided to call my dad to ask him if he could stay for a while.  And he did, for a week.

At the time I was not interested in politics at all.  My dad is very politically savvy and on the far left of the spectrum, so I asked him later if the two of them had talked about it, and he said that he eventually became too shocked by his views that he decided to leave it be.

He was a very friendly man, though.

yeah they tend to be nice people with horrible views. there was this hilariously awful political cartoon that showed gay people protesting outside of utah and some mormon lady offering something and one of the gay dudes yells "THE HATE STATE'S OFFERING US SOME BANANA BREAD" and the implication is that these are not horrible people, which is true.

of course, this defense falls apart when you ask if a minority would prefer its rights or some banana bread and at what exact ratio banana bread tends to overcome rights (this better be some sweet ass bread).

Almost everyone, republican or democrat, in alaska supports drilling in ANWR because of jobs. There's not much else going on up there so if there's no expansion of the oil industry up there then there's no new jobs.

I don't agree with it, but it's no surprise that any alaskan politician would give lip service to drilling in ANWR.

if it's as good as my momma's banana bread and there's a constant supply as long as i got to go on the internet and read books i'm pretty sure i'd trade for gitmo

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

He's probably a helluvalot better than that Ted Stevens guy.

"YEAH um I'ma use TAXPAYER MONEY to build an access road between my HOUSE and my FAVORITE BAR!"

I can't believe this guy won re-election. He's supposed to step down though -- and Palin chooses the next. Time for your uncle to schmooze.

By the way, what was up with Alaskan voting turnout this year?

EDIT:
More on Stevens. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/stevens-guilty-of-felony-charges-2008-10-27.html

My bad.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/stevens

Stevens didn't win at all. Democrats won. Sorry about your uncle, then.
