Joern Utzon is the architect who designed the famous Sydney Opera House, one of Australia's most prominent opera houses.

I am studying to be an architect so he's kind of a big deal, and today the opera house is one of the most iconic buildings in the world with its multiple white sails. It's said that Utzon got his inspiration from peeling an orange, which gives you an idea of how arbitrary design inspirations can be.

Regardless, the man was fantastic at what he did and the Sydney Opera House is darkening in mourning, which is a nice way to go.

I'm torn over architecture as a field in general, actually.

Like a lot of people in the field think they're hotshots and are ridiculously pretentious, sitting back in chairs and eating French sandwiches, but on the other hand there are a few architects who actually do care about designing things well and making buildings effective places to live or work in.

Utzon made things pretty, mainly, but at least was a pleasant dude.

my brother's an architect so I hear about this sort of thing quite a lot.

Barcelona has some impressive buildings from Gaudi. Although its debatable whether you could call him an architect from looking at some of his projects. He often starts with an existing building and molds some shell around it and messes the interior. Some people think he was more of a sculptor. Either way, I managed to look around the building that was based off 20,000 leagues under the sea and it was pretty cool.
