I jokingly mentioned in the Far Cry 2 topic we had last month that the game was STALKER for casuals.
I liked the direction they were going and half the time I had fun but the other half was just boring and repetitive. Yes, the weapon degradation system is ridiculous because enemy guns pretty much fall apart when you pick them up but the enemy never has a problem using them with their infinite ammo. Also, new guns you use will degrade after four or five clips so extended firefights get pretty lame.
I also hate how, and this applies to nearly every first person shooter and I still can't believe in this day and age it still happens, enemies are pumped up on morphine or something. You shoot someone in the chest and they take it like a man. Empty a clip in a guy's leg and he doesn't even limp; hell, he hardly flinches. Also, enemy AI is random as hell. Sometimes they'll actually pull off some crafty flanking maneuvers and good use of grenades but other times they'll literally stand 5 feet away from you and just stand there... doing... nothing. One guy was standing in front of a jeep and I was shooting him in the leg to see how many shots it would take to kill him and I must have been shooting him for a minute but he did nothing.
Admittedly, vanilla STALKER sucked horribly and the game didn't become great until the 1.05 patch followed by the excellent Oblivion Lost mod which added stuff like repairing, modified ballistic trajectory, and vehicles. The level editor is pretty fun but since this is a multiconsole/pc release, I doubt if it's very modding friendly. With the exception of the Elder Scroll series which has always supported modding, I don't remember Ubisoft releasing SDK's or toolkits that allow easy modding. This game would be awesome if someone who actually knew what they were doing fine tuned everything Ubisoft glossed over.
