So my computer is 8 years old and it's dying.  It's crappy and goes really slow.  I click the Firefox icon and it takes about 30 seconds or longer to come up.  Sometimes it will randomly say Firefox is not responding (or other programs).  It's old...has 256MB of ram, 40GB hard drive...etc basically old shitty stuff.  I'm looking for a new computer that is decent.  I don't want the cheapest one available, but would preferably not want to spend like over 700 or 800 bucks.  Basically what I need this comp is for basic school stuff (Word processing...etc), internet, and that's pretty much it.  All I do on my computer is look at stuff online, download/listen to music, and talk to people on IM.  I don't play games (other than stupid little online ones and the only game I would really want to play is Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and that came out awhile ago so should be ok).

Also, I have another question.  I have a second hard drive in my shitty comp now that is 160GB and exclusively for music.  I bought this and installed it a couple of years ago myself and am wondering if I can just take it out and transfer it to my new pc when I get one if it will be ok and work and have all my stuff on it (I have over 20,000 songs I don't want to lose :( ).

Basically, computer for just browsing the next and listening to tunes, one that isn't super cheap (like how you can buy comps for like $399 that come with everything) and one that isn't over $800.  Also, I really don't need everything just a tower would do fine (I saw some online for like 500-600 bucks that looked decent for what I do but I dunno recommend me some!)

Thanks dudes!

You could probably find a decent one for around $500 for what you want. Also you CAN transfer the HDD over, HOWEVER most modern motherboards only have a single IDE/PATA/ATA slot meaning you have to make sure that the new isn't taking that up.

Like Farmrush said $500 should be enough for what you need from the sound of it. You'll get the cheapest deal if you hand pick components yourself and put it together yourself as well. You don't necessarily need to move your old HDD to your new computer. Just get big enough HDD for your needs, and get a cheap adapter which lets you connect your IDE drive via USB externally, and transfer your music over your new HDD (I got one a couple of months back for like $15, and it could connect both IDE and SATA via USB). Although if you really want to, you can connect it with IDE though, I doubt that you're gonna have anything else hooked up on IDE, because even optical drives are usually SATA nowadays.

big thanx to dragonslayer for sig!

i dont know why you are scared of overshooting your vegan forum browsing needs!!!

but like rami said you'd get your best deal just picking parts and making it yourself, but that gateway is ok I guess, even if any kind of gateway support is shit(i have a gateway)

Quad-core seems like overkill for what you want to do with it. Just get a decent dual core and you'll be fine.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883109020 is almost identical to one of my other computers.

EDIT: so I recommend it.

just get a netbook dude you can find some for like $300

this only because you said you're only going to be doing mostly browsing and word processing (you can use a external for music if you feel the need). They are also lightweight and trendy

I don't know man I don't think that you can get computers made out of spirulina so . . .

Anyway you should probably buy a cheap laptop like a low-end HP or a Toshiba.  You can get them at Best Buy for $399 with a free printer if you find a sale.

I suggest anyone who has a fairly comprehensive repair warranty, that's the main perk of a pre-built system (besides not having to build it, I guess).
