or try to get on g4 where this level of acting and humor is probably still above average
  • Group: Guest
G4 isn't that great but they're still miles ahead of Game Damage. Even though it's really basic and idiot-proof TV it's still enjoyable and the presenters never feel like they're talking to 'real people' for the first time ever.

Whereas with Game Damage basically everyone that doesn't lick Yahtzee's balls thinks it is god awful and painful to watch. I wouldn't say they are above average when they are worse than pretty much every single presenter G4 has ever had.

Also in regards to reviewing in general, you either find them useful or you don't. That's it. Yes the vast majority of reviews are bullshit suck-up fests and are blatantly written by bribed journalists looking for more exclusives, and yes they never ever mention any of the problems or bugs or installation issues (in regards to PC games, especially lately), but I still find them useful. I tend to ignore the whole 'OMG THIS IS SO EXCELLENT 100% NO, 120%!!' comments and just look for what the game does differently. Seeing as I'm a PC gamer and I generally only play FPS/RTS games - which are probably the most heavily saturated markets on PC - it's useful just to see what each game does or doesn't do differently to every other game out there.

Yeah it's blatantly obvious what something like Command & Conquer or Call of Duty is gonna offer, but games like STALKER or Earth 2150 I would've completed skipped over if it wasn't for the reviews going on about their unique gameplay elements.

and dom: Shooting things in the leg? what are you talking about. There isn't a single enemy in the game which requires you to shoot it in the legs to kill it. If you played MORE than 5 minutes you'd realise the blowing off the limbs thing isn't a gimmick it's an actual feature that changes the combat pretty drastically (at least until you get a super high powered machine gun which is more effective than cutting off limbs)

fallout originated shooting things in the leg (it was useless though since anyone who was any kind of good shot would just go for the eyes every time anyhow)

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

yo it said specifically shooting them doesn't work uness you shoot their limbs off. it was some spider like creatures or whatever.

and i dont like playing games for more than 5 minutes when they dont offer more than SHOOT SOME SHIT WHILE WALKING REALLY SLOWLY AND IM NOT GOING TO OFFER ANY STORYLINE OR ANYTHING

maybe it was just a really bad demo but if your demo is shit what hope do you have for your game?

Ugh why did TechTV have to get bought out?  It was the best, even Extended Play (f*ck the abbreviated name) was fun to watch back then.  The second that merger happened it started its fall to being one of the worst channels ever.

The last time I watched it was when they were showing Legend of the Drunken Master and it had been a LONG time since I had watched G4 before then.  I didn't even finish watching it because they cut out the entire scene where he gets drunk and sings and has the fight and is strung up naked and they just pretended like it made sense for him to suddenly be welcomed back to his house.  That editing was so poor that I finally decided G4 wasn't even worth watching for things I already knew were good.

Like Pickleteats was implying I think Yahtzee's reviews are just meant to be entertainment. They're not really reviews.

As for the news media I think they are just entertainment too. It seems like my mom watches CNN & stuff 24/7 when I go to visit and it's really annoying garbage but I guess it gets people to watch. And I have heard about the cabinet choices, I think you just can't really watch CNN and cable news networks for that stuff.

both of these are variable though. people are arguing in this thread they are not just entertainment but legit reviews, and we all know fox news etc. the line between entertainment and fact shifts if the media says its presenting itself as one of them.

I just sat through the whole fucking thing.  I laughed once, at the very end, when they showed that the prize was a bag of cheap candy.  But that was more of a chuckle because my humor had been drained by everything preceding it.

I like Yahtzee's reviews on The Escapist, but seeing what he looks like made me realize he's everyone I hate.  He's the kind of guy in high school or college who ONLY talks about video games or D&D, but has a smug look the entire god damn time.  These people are at the bottom of the social ladder, which is fine by me, but when they act like they're on the top, I just want to strangle them.  There's nothing wrong with being a video game nerd, but don't act like you're better than everyone else because of it.

Still, Yahtzee is honest in his reviews, so I respect him for that.  I just never, ever want to see him on screen again.

It just seems to me that since he's so goddamn negative about everything  it would be kinda hard to judge when he has a legitimate point about a flaw from when he's just exaggerating so he has an excuse to MSPaint Kratos with tits getting butthumped by a goomba.

And there's also the fact that if you really rely on reviews a lot before you go out and purchase a game there are much better resources for that elsewhere on the internet.

I feel sorry for anyone watching any of his reviews for any actual knowlege on the game, most the time it requires previous knowlege of said game to even get what he's referrencing.
My all-time two favoirite steps to see if I would be interested in a game is 1. Google images: check out what kind of game it is, what the interface is like, what kind of graphics to expect, and 2: Youtube videos of gameplay: I can see what a good 50-90% of the gameplay will be like, and have an idea of what to expect from it. Only then will I read a review for some extra insight.\

Oh yea, and both Goldeneye and Soldier of Fortune allowed leg/arm/body shots, too.

I don't really get Yahtzee as HUMOR though because it's not especially funny!  I mean it's okay but it's shit as a review (hint: yes reviews in most magazines and things don't always talk about all the bad points but WE HAVE MESSAGE BOARDS so people WILL tell you the problems with a game) and it's not better than most internet things humor-wise.  If I want to listen to a British guy review video games, I'd rather just watch Dr. Ashens because at least he's reviewing shit no one else will because they're all horrible ripoffs of things no one would buy on purpose and so you're not likely to ever see these things in action.

It is pretty crude humor so it just has to appeal to you.

If by crude you mean 'unpolished and high school-esque' then I agree with you.
