I fucking knew it was something like this, I even told panda like two hours ago "its a fightclub thing for shitty 4chan shit, watch"

Man I thought you where being sarcastic about rules 1 and 2 and where just waiting for someone to link to the article on the rules of the internet (which includes rule 34 , mentioned above) just to show how useful ED is as the internetdumbshit wiki.

Which is fair.

But it makes it no less painful to see brought up.

I'm guessing from most of the posts here Yahtzee is some kind of web celeb? Sorry I don't really keep up with these things.

For years he was just in indie game developer with a blog. A lot of people knew him for that... but  his eCeleb status began when he started zero punctuation, a video game review series that is gaining popularity exponentially as the weeks go by. If you saw the video linked here, you can already tell what his style of humor is. I tried to like it (zero punctuation, not game damage) considering who he was, but I couldn't.

I don't really understand all that RAGE against Yahtzee though, I think his videos are pretty funny, and his games pretty cool. Is there something horrible he did that I missed?
Some say zero punctuation is the horrible thing. At least I do. I lost a lot of the respect I had for him as it progressed. In the back of my mind I hope his dry execution in Game Damage was a sign of his discontent towards the gaming community and his fans since they paid infinitely more attention to his videos than his creative work (which apparently also includes two failed books).

AH thanks for clearing that up. I'll take a look at his reviews tomorrow probably.

And yeah I was being sarcastic. That's what the ^_~ face was for. That's my sarcasm face. It's quite winky. Or twitchy. Actually it sort of looks like it has an eye infection.

I was actually talking to steel, but that doesn't surprise me either.  /b/ is an awful forum and I had my doubts as to whether or not you actually followed it.

Yeah don't follow it so much. At the risk of being flamed at some point, I find it a little too... disturbing.

there's two terrible things he did, depending on how you look at it. If you're a  member of the AGS community (i'm not, but i've read about this probably on his blog and i checked a couple of topics on the AGS forums and the AGS wiki about it), a long time ago, probably a little after he started his website, he ranted on the AGS forums something egotistical i think. He has publicly apologized a couple of times, but a lot of the AGS community has been unwilling to forgive him.

the other thing was zero punctuation, or at least a by-product of that. For a while he was regularly updating his blog (it started as a daily thing), it slowed down a little bit when he was working and realized the website was eating up too much of his time, but it was still fairly regular. Then he moved to australia and didn't do anything for a while because he was largely without internet. He got hooked up and started doing updates again, on a sort-of-steady pace, then he made the first two video rants, got picked up by the escapist, and stopped updating his website mostly. a short story maybe once a year, and then "hey guys, new video's up." with sometimes a little mini-rant. Worst of all he stopped making games, which were my favorite thing he did.

Me and my friends are gonna do something like this but we're not gonna limit it to games, we figured it would be interesting to cover a wider range of entertainment media that people in our age range follow (so TV, comedy, film, games, services).

Don't get me wrong though, we watched through this and thought it was terrible. The inspiration is from the thought "we could do that and so much better".

yahtzee is a terrible person for doing something else, and then focusing most of his time on it instead of what YOU think he should be doing? hes a terrible person for doing something that is entertaining and also makes him money? this is possibly the epitome of HE SOLD OUT MAN!!!

you're seriously fucking overanalysing zero punctuation. they are just video game reviews with a slight towards the negative. people are fed up with game reviews having unwarranted praise. zero punctuation is about exposing flaws in games that other reviews dont (want to?) pick up on. it is not about him HATING EVERYTHING. it is a fucking made up personality that is used for comedic effect.

that you lost respect for the guy for doing it speaks volumes about your warped view moreso than it does his.

My thoughts exactly. I can compare this, although not entirely, to Maddox:
If you browse his site, all his articles are about "I'm the best and I hate ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING"
But I recall reading on an interview or whatever somewhere that it really is just for entertainment, 80% of the stuff he hates on his site he either doesn't hate or just doesn't care about.

But Maddox might be a terrible example. Whatever.

it's more like now he's got that "i hate everything" character, when on his blog he wasn't COMPLETELY NEGATIVE ALWAYS. MaYBE 50% of the time, and his games were really pretty good. and i think the I HATE EVERYTHING character has affected his own cynicism. I think he has mentioned in a couple of "there's a new video" updates, maybe in a video itself that he's pretty pissed that THIS is what he got recognized and paid for, that he would rather be doing the other stuff but he can't because he's busy.

i'm not a fan or anything and he can be pretty intolerable but i do appreciate the fact that he actually finds flaws in games when reading game reviews these days is like having someone poop in your mouth and tell you it's chocolate

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

sweet so best character quality: doesn't make up lies about video games for money and instead actually acknowledges the flaws that anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows games have

yes, i also know every flaw a game has without even owning or playing it

do you know what the purpose of game reviews are?

why yes dom thanks but the point is that at the juncture where you are saying WELL AT LEAST HE IS NOT COMPLETELY AWFUL you should probably just let it go.  being able to point out flaws in a game that anyone who wasn't half-retarded could see isn't a particularly noteworthy character trait

Wow, having to keep it PG-13 really destroys the edge he has in his online reviews.

I think that this might have a bit of potential if these three guys went through a rigorous six month TV boot camp run by someone who actually has experience being in front of a camera, then cut the guy with the fat face anyway and opt for an all-around genuine fat guy with a beard who doesn't have an opinion on anything but mercilessly tickles Yahtzee every time he gets too nihilistic.

Even then I'm not sure that this idea could be salvaged.  Gotta respect them for trying, but I really don't think this will ever work.

rules 1 and 2 of 4chan/the internet

1. Do not talk about /b/
2. Do NOT talk about /b/

tahts right i know this. im such a terrible person for being informed on subjects that i find distateful. kill me!!!!!

Don't talk like that, you are not a terrible person.

It's just that me not knowing anything about what you guys are talking about and not having any information on subjects I find distasteful makes me a better person than you. That's all.

(Hey, I didn't know about Man-O-War's avatar or signature either! It's reassuring to know that both of us are better than Chainer *in at least one way*.)

But of course there's always time to argue on the internet about why what you know matters more and how you're a better person because of it!!

yes because reading a review isn't useful in the slightest, i guess because i want an opinion on a $50 purchase i don't know anything about because surprise i haven't played it yet i'm half retarded

like i said i'm not a yahtzee fan. i get what you're saying but really this is just another occasion of you beating a point into the ground just to be a dick??

The sole point of reviews is to give out an opinion, you NEED a negative dick somewhere in that crowd.

For instance his review of Mass Effect. He pointed out the huge flaws in the really buggy combat and so I was weary of that, it was also because of him that I knew that there might be an encyclopedia's worth of text in there and that the main quest is really short (all reviews pointed out it "isn't as long as most games").
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.
