waaait a sec, doing a torrent comparison here:

» Ogg / q7 (VBR) / CD    14   1 month, 3 weeks   85.80 MB   8   2   0
[DL ][/DL]
» MP3 / 320 / CD    11   3 months, 2 weeks   115.48 MB   247   60   1
[DL ][/DL]
» MP3 / 320 / CD / US Deluxe Edition - 2008    18   2 months, 1 week   168.47 MB   155   43   1
[DL ][/DL]
» MP3 / V0 (VBR) / CD    13   3 months, 3 weeks   94.00 MB   4,477   852   3
[DL ][/DL]
» MP3 / V0 (VBR) / CD / US Deluxe Edition - 2008    16   3 months, 2 weeks   127.92 MB   1,867   430   15

is v0 better quality? i mean granted the difference here should not be noticeable (as opposed to much lower rip rates) but why not rip at 320 its not much of a space increase?

Yeah 320 is good enough? I cannot hear the difference between an actual CD and 320 kbps.

v0 uses variable bitrate, it rips songs with the quality they need or something like that, i don't really know the details. but i always download music in v0 and rip music in v0 and it's the best and doesn't take nearly as much space as 320.

v0 encodes parts that need higher quality in higher quality and parts that dont in lower quality, meaning audibly equal quality with lower filesize

and if you can tell the difference between v0 and 320cbr then im afraid i started this sentence wrong, because you cant

edit: in fact, even v1 and v2 are sufficient in most cases. you can go down to v4 (which is approximately 155kbps) and still maintain a good level of transparency

You're just wasting space and it can add up if you've got a large music library. There are parts of songs, like silence, that don't require a high bitrate to sound good so when you encode something in LAME using the -V0,-V1,-V2,etc. setting the software with 'look' at the music spectrum and automatically determine which bitrate is appropriate for each part of the song based on how much compression you want resulting in something that sounds like a 320k file but actually varies throughout the song.

I still swear by the skullcandy brand and I recently myself purchased these headphones for $101.37 (after tax)
There soft and comfy on the ears and light to be wearing, there bass amplifier feature is excellent and the sound quality is spectacular!
They have a button on the overhead piece to fold them in half for easier storage.  When the fold down around your neck they fold padding touching your neck speakers facing up so there really comfortable and still listenable like that too!

I say got for them!

So my HD280s arrived and I'm fairly happy with the purchase. The noise-cancellation is great, they sound great, and I really like the coiled cord from one ear because it doesn't get tangled. They are fairly comfortable, and my only gripe is that they may be a bit too tight for some people as they do apply a decent amount of pressure around your head (nothing to be concerned about though, it isn't going to CRUSH YOUR BRAINS or anything).

I agree with Dom. Skullcandy headphones are ridiculously priced and not that good. You could of gotten something much better for that price.

Farmrush, yeah some headphones are fairly comfortable but after a long time it can become kinda annoying to have them on tight for the noise cancellation. I have some Vic Firth studio headphones to listen to music while I play the drums and since I want to hear the music properly you have to put them on a little bit tighter and it gets annoying after an hour or so.

hey so bumpin the topic

I'm considering getting the HD-555's that everyone seems to love. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive and they've been established as some sort of BEST HEADPHONES UNDER $100 standard.

My question to those who have similar "open circumaural" headphones (Most Sennheisser HD's other than the 280, i think): What is it like listening to music on the go? Since these offer no noise isolation and, on the contrary, are somehow "open" to the air to maximize the sound reverbations/quality, can you only enjoy music in a quiet environment?

This is the one roadblock I need to figure out before I get these, because this supposed issue of "noise leakage" is confusing to me, especially since I have been using noise-isolating in-ear buds for the past 2 years.

So basically, as someone who is used to noise-isolating headphones, would the dramatic improvement in sound quality be enough for me to disregard the lack of noise cancellation?

edit: and don't recommend ear buds to me because i really am adamant on going with BIG NERD phones for a change

my housemate has the HD-555s and he seems to like them. He also said that even though there is no noise isolation, you can't hear much background noise with them on becuase the general dampening around the ears
