Some Kind of ReviewGenerally I think the ordering of the tracks was spot on and I like cover art of this particular album a lot more than I usually do.
I am pretty amateurish when it comes to audio production although I have tried to be constructive about each track. For some I've said what I imagined whilst listening and I think it would be interesting to see what other people thought of when they played though.
On with the tracks:
1. Lars - MåneferdThe ambience of this song is amazing - I would really like you to tell me how you made your soundscapes and got them to blend together so well. The mood starts sinister with the voices and goes into a sort of futuristic-gangster-movie-intro sequence where you can imagine people trading information on concrete platforms dressed in dirty jumpsuits and trying not to make eye contact with rather abundant CCTV cameras everywhere. Ok maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration but I like to listen to the latest troubs in bed wearing my beefy headphones and I sorta drift off and dream. If you have more music like this send me it. This is one of my faves on the album.
2. Unt - Bathing in ShadowsI've heard one or two of the things you sent me on MSN an age ago and they were brilliant then and you appear to have EVOLVED FURTHER. The placement of the drums and effects are so spot on that you get a sensation when you're listening to it, you know how you subconsciously secondguess what's going to happen next in a song, but the song beats you to it and you get that little ooooooooooo-rush?
3. Soulmman - Use-A-NameFirst things first - I know nothing about rap or hiphop or whatever you cool kids call it. Yeah I have one or two mainstream rap records on my PC that would make Steel throw up on his shoes if he heard them. From a completely unexperienced perspective this sounds really professional, like a real track I would hear on the radio. I like how the lyrics aren't necessarily i-will-break-yo-face-nigga-and-take-yo-car and they are pretty soft for rap and are nice on my ears. I'd like to listen to more of this perhaps getting rapeducation at the same time (help a white guy out here?)
4. helter skelter - Raw (Wu-Tang Clan remix)I feel like going downstairs and punching my mum in the tits when I listen to this. No I joke but really, it sounds COOL and ANGRY (but see the above review as I am raptarded).
5. Alec - My Time MachineYou need drums. I like the lyrics and the concept that you can't get your time machine working. I am not too sure what level you are on for home-recording and whatnot and what you used but you obviously have talent and you should get some $$$ to buy some kit to improve your recordings. This reminds me of the time I was trying to reduce muffle on vocals by recording in my wardrobe and then coming out to find my mum just going O_O at me from the other side of my room. No mum, I wasn't looking for Narnia.
6. JOJOFACE - RestlessThis tracks is fucking fantastic. I say that because since its release I have listened to it a good 10 times already. Maybe it's the melancholy of it all that appeals to me? I imagine traffic out of focus in a dystopian city with rain drawn in lines hammering on the ground like a cell from the graphic novel in Max Payne. Definitely something to do with travelling somewhere emotional. You should make a whole album and feed it to my ears.
7. Jamie Sime - I Can See StarsThe vocals in your songs always seem subtley stiking, they really draw you in and this one is no different. Although you pull of the guitar backing and vocals quite well I am more of a fan of you and your electronic music (so please do more). When are you releasing a new album? - that's what I wanna know.
8. Raen - IthavolThis is classic i-am-in-a-dark-boiler-room-and-something-is-about-to-happen music! It's like if you extracted the guitar line from a arbitrary NIN track and ommitted his blips and bass you would probably be left with something like this. It's creepy and I like it.
9. ATARI - Brand New DayI hate ATARI. I even PM'ed him an iframe of meatspin.com once because he warned me for someshit. Saying that I am totally gay for his music. Fantastic.
In the past it has been a bit... tissy (too many hi-hats and cymbals) but you seem to have got that totally sorted now. Every time I hear something new from you your voice gets better and the tracks sound more and more professional. I would not be surprised if we were all going to see ATARI in concert in future years, just make sure you hire someone to take out MJK before you do that
10. Chris Riggs - My Love is Shared (Death from Above 1979 cover)The guitar sounds proper ass at first but then after about 20 seconds or so the song begins to suit itself (I don't know if that makes sense?). The vocals are really cool and I like the effect used on them, gives a robotic edge that adds to the mechanical-metal feel of it. I would be interested to hear more music in this style to see if it works.
11. Kevin Liu & Ryan S. Jenq - Falling Slowly (The Frames cover)When I was younger (16, I'm 21 now) I wrote a song for my girlfriend at the time because I was totally besotted and the vocals sounded like this. Now several years after committing such terrible crimes against music I still sorta swear randomly (anyone else do that when they remember something embarassing that they did?).
Saying that you have balls for actually recording a record and putting it out there and I enjoyed it in a weird way.
12. Mince Wobley - Experimental progressive sludge indie rockOne day I am going to climb inside your head and sit on the laterally moving cogs in that rotary engine you have up there and observe the random facts as they pass by. As I do that this music will emant from several lobes that flicker with a sort of malevolent KNOWING about itself. I like how it is complete nonsense but at the same time interesting to listen to. I don't think I could listen to a whole album of sludge noise but at the same time I can see myself enjoying it in short bursts between tracks.
13. DarkPriest - Shores of RoineThis music would really suit a game like Deus Ex or some sort of high-speed futuristic racer like Wipeout. It could be the backing music to the screen where you set your payload layout on your spacecraft before pressing "fly" (like you did in FA-18 hornet but futuristic). Saying that, if you're one of those people who aims to make techno and hates it when people say "oh this is VG music" I am sorry. I get that all the time too but it DOES sound like computer game music!
14. DJ Jazzper feat Bonghits - Where My Burgers AtThis track is upbeat but in a deliberately-detuned way that makes you feel somewhat uneasy. I guess you could compare it to walking through a village that has some weird cult and KNOWING about it as you walk, acknowleding them in a freaky way hoping that you're not giving away that you know. I really like the percussion used in this and the timing of noises and effects that complement the freakyishness. The way that sounds that are just noise are pushed to create new sounds is cool and I like it.
15. ase - field experimentsThis reminds me of one of those adverts where to advertise the product they take TV footage of it making different noises by funtioning then strapping them together. I'm sure they did it on top gear with a bunch of poorly made cars to see what music they could get out of them if they played them. Pretty eerie but at the same time I knew exactly where it was going.
16. helter skelter - Oh BabyI love the backing track you've got on this, not necessarily the vocals that have been snatched from that other song because I am from the UK and have heard that song a billion times. Do I like it? I am completely undecided.
17. Puppet Master - DarlaThis sounds like the strokes in a really nice way. I love the organish instrument you've got running in the background and the roughness of the guitar and vocals combined. This is one of my faves off the album and I would really like to hear more stuff like this.
18. Tophue - MachinesThis really had to be listened to on headphones to be appreaciated. If you listened to it on speakers you might not have got the way different guitar tracks are placed in different areas between your ears. It's pretty beautiful and another one of my favourites off this compilation. I am gonna try something like this and get back to you on that one because I really like the style.
19. Ace Heartwind Teckno Club - BobbleheadCreepy intro that reminds me of something but I have no idea what. If I were remaking littlebigplanet as a game where you slaughter children and play basketball with their dead bodies I would put this on the soundtrack (give or take a few q'ran references). I really like this one in particular because of how professionally creepy it sounds. It's like Aphex twin and radiohead had a baby and brought it up on pot noodles and smack. Fantastic stuff. Make more. Now.
20. Alec - Take My Heart to the FlamesMy comments for this are pretty much the same as for Time Machine. You need to get a drummer or a drum sequencer and drop some bass and percs onto this shit and it'll be epic.
21. Ryan S. Jenq - A Gangster's LamentBack to imagining things that go with the music, I can kinda see some sort of noir scene where two dark figures are doing some sort of waltz in a smoky hall with shadowy pillars marking the perimeter of a black-and-white tiled floor. Like a dance with a sense of forboding, a prelude to another scene where one of them gets it from fat tony with the tommy gun. In all seriousness though, this is a pretty good contribution and I like it a lot. It does sound very cinematic/dramatic.
22. Mince Wobley - Will My Three Year Old Son Love Me More If I Buy Him A Playstation ThreeIf he's one of these wankers who likes to jump around and destroy ornaments and furniture a PS3 is just the job. Send him round to his friend's house to destroy their living room instead.
This track has a lot more mood and feeling to it than the other (more sludgey) contribution. I can imagine with some foreground vocals this could sound a lot deeper and melancholy. It would be cool to see an extended version of this track with those features.
23. JOJOFACE - Step 1, Create One Idea. Step 2, Create A Second Idea. Step 3. Combine. Regardless.I like both of your tracks from this album. I really hope you are working on a CD of your own or you have one you can send to me or something because I really dig the style and mood of your music and they almost fit my current musical tastes like a glove. A sort of subtle melancholic electronica that retains suggestion without losing dignity and going all heavy and glitchy like all the reznors are doing these days (I love NIN just the world and his wife and myself will stop at nothing to get that sound mixed down to MP3).
24. conchfeld / Puppet Master / ase - Come DecemberHoly crap. That's all I can say. It's like Jonny Cash but I don't want to hang myself with my shit primark belt instead I am totally amazed. The three sections are like separate acts in a play and they fit together really well. I'm not sure I've heard many GW related tracks that have been worked on by 3 people - this is a pretty extraordinary effort. It's sorta christmassy too which I know is not the point of the album but it certainly suits this moment in time.
The recording and guitar was really excellent and a great way to end the album.
I haven't done anything meritocratic like rate each track out of ten, however, I would like to say that I thought this one was pretty above par and my favourite contributor to this was JOJOFACE who I had previously heard nothing from.
