Riot Grrrl is a great game, by the way, to anyone who hasn't played it.

. . .

Thanks!

Erm, what is happening in that screenshot. Is the text asking you if you want to use that skill after you press [1] or... what? Also, is that a turn-based system or is it something else?

Well, the text is a tooltip for the selected ability. The game is controlled solely by use of the arrow keys and the number keys. Pressing [Up] will select the blue-haired hero, and pressing [1] will choose the sword icon labeled 1. Then, the enemy(ies) have numbers hover in front of them (in this case, only a single enemy). You then click that last number to execute the ability.

It's not really turn-based as it all takes place in real time. You just swap to whichever character you want to use an ability with. This way you're not diving into and out of menus all the time. You can just tap an arrow key to change characters.

Still not happy with this one. Something about the desk/computer doesn't sit right with me...

I think it's because the edges of the desk look like they belong to a one-point perspective, receding to a single point in the distance, but that makes the curve of the desk just look wonky and sinking. Maybe if you made them more acute? or just straighten them out completely? idk about perspective i'm just winging it. I like the city horizon though.

Right now it just looks flat, but you just need to add another shade of brown to the desk to make it pop out. I would start by dithering the front of the desk so that it further brings out the curvature. About the computer, I think it's just angled too strongly. Reduce the angle a little bit so that it more closely follows the angle of the desk and then it'll look right.

I love how you've made the skyrises in the background. The lights are great!

I made a little more progress with the sprite, including the animations for the bow.

@Fallen-Griever: Seems too wide for a desk and it's quite empty too! Make it shorter I think the window showing the city lights is really cool!
@KillerWolf: I like what I'm seeing with this new platformer of yours! I like the bow sprite looks natural.

I took a stab at it. I think it was because the back edge of the desk was inconsistent with the perspective, as was the mouse. As Mateui said, some shading might help also, but I disagree on the point of the monitor as it seems to be facing where I expect the user of the computer to be. Also you may want to consider widening the desk to 1.5 to 2 times the current width as it looks like it can barely fit a plate or keyboard on it (which may also be whats leading your eye to label it as funny looking)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I think the main problem was that the sides of the "top" of the desk were too vertical and that makes it look like the top of the desk is... slanted towards the viewer, as if it isn't flat. Widening the desk seems like a good idea, too, and I've made the mouse smaller like you suggested, Vanit.

@KillerWolf: That game looks really intriguing. Is it some sort of platformer?

@nickmasterx: That first screenshot looks really... weird. The sprites and the background clash quite a bit and it is hard to see what is going on since they've been reduced in size so much...

Maybe it was just an innocent crash...

I've been messing with a platformer in Construct, the plan is to set it up so that I just draw a bunch of islands on pieces of paper and then scan them in and explore them in a game. Some of the slopes don't work too well with the default platform setup and I'm still on the very basics of getting shit done/havent started thinking about actual game design or enemies at all yet. Here's my practice level if anyone's interested: http://www.mediafire.com/?22l1d8k8c6319ls z to jump arrows to move

Wait, are you making algorithms to automatically set the map up to be playable or are you going to still have to fiddle around with invisible platforms etc after you scan it in? I really like the idea of "draw a map, game let's you play it", if that's what you're doing! Otherwise, hand drawn platformer sounds good because every other platformer is mario or megaman rips/edits and that's visually boring.
Might I suggest setting the hearts Horizontal instead of Vertical? it seems a lot more obstructive like that.

ps: is the main character a girl? looks like they've got pigtails so i assume yes?
don't mind me, just postin' after a few brewskies

I used an invisible platform for the first island (the one in the pic) because the platform behaviour acts a bit wonky with irregular slopes, otherwise I just imported them as sprites and set them to Solid and stuck on some background stuff like the house and trees. This probably takes a lot of space so I'll try importing just the pencil outlines in future! They're generally pretty playable as they are though, I just had to make the player collision mask into an oval shape to make it easier to get over all the little bumps in handdrawn stuff. Also I really like the idea of letting people scan in their own islands, I'm thinking it would be set up as like importing an image just as background and then getting them to draw over where the surface should be with a mouse, which would create an invisible solid surface. And then maybe click buttons to create objects at mouse.x and mouse.y idk I have no idea what the limits of this system or my abilities are yet! I've changed the hearts though. Also yeah it's meant to be an angry pirate girl

It's just a 30 second cutscene they're supposed to be small because the building is huge.
