Yeah most people give up on trying to make their own game look/feel unique. I think NB is right about the case by case bases that should be applied. RPG games are almost always terrible. I have yet to play an ALL AROUND GREAT rpg game in the commercial/indie scene for years. Yeah I played some average games but I'm talking about a game that left lasting impressions. I first thought I grew out of the whole genre, which i probably did. But I also still think that it's just because there aren't many people trying anymore (or at least lacking the talent).

I think NB was wrong about this applying to any genre. Rpg games are really really bad now a days more so then a LOT of genres. I can easily get into even crappy FPS, SHMUPs, or strategy games if the foundation is good. I don't play rpg games for gameplay alone, I'm usually looking for an enthralling story that FEATURES good gameplay, graphics, music, etc. All the eye candy will only keep me entertained for only a short way into the game.

I didn't even want to post this but I did. About stealing people's graphics, it's pretty bad no matter how you look at it. Just ask, it wouldn't hurt anyone if you did. In my old days I had sent out over 100 PMs asking people for help, and some of them responded  :welp:. I don't ask anymore because I don't need anyone.

I think it's also stupid that people automatically assume things are ripped. Konix is dead on about when people ask "Hey is that original, if not give me it!". I typically just ignore people asking me personally as everything I touch is a coupled with rips, original, editted stuff.

this is why people don't make rpg's any more.  it was a viable option in the past because of technical limitations but the thing rpg's focused on (narrative) is now better applied to games that allow the player to actually play them instead of click through menus.

Its true that the RPG game scene has been stagnant for some time now, and most are just plain awful, the reason I choose to still create one is the joy I get out of looking at something I have finished and going, damn I did that! Even if the graphics aren't original, it still took hours and hours of my own time to meld the maps, story, battles, etc. Regardless of whether or not I made everything used in the game, the game is still MINE. I enjoy a lot of rpg games still, yet I find myself being more enthralled by the exploring games such as Oblivion, Fallout 3, Neverwinter Nights 2, Etc. And it would seem the traditional RPG is slowly being replaced by massive online games with massive amounts of content that still retain a story. Why would you pay 50 bucks for a 30 hour game, when you could get a 1k hour PLUS game for the same price? Im not really sure what point im trying to make now, but I will continue to make my rpg games as long as I have a story to tell and I have fun doing it. The day it isnt fun for me anymore is the day I quit.

Just started this HUD, tell me if the Lighting and HUD stick out too much.... please! :fogetnaughty:

The lighting's fine and the HUD should really stand out. Hey, does this ring me of Parasite Eve or Galerians?

This is what I was trying to explain earlier.  Some people don't care about that kind of thing.  I'm not saying that I don't care. (I've changed my project 7 times... just to keep it looking different from the people that jack the resources or make something identical to a screen)

I understand where you and Rpg are coming from... but not everyone takes it so seriously.

These are older screens... but they're better than none: (Considering how none has been posted in a little while)

Case and point... EVERYONE uses Rudra rips nowadays... they used to be quite obscure.

Uh nah, last time I checked there were only 2 games that used rudra, LotPS and Demon Hunter 2 or something...

None the less, great just what we need more fuckin' rudra.

But nice maps they bring attention to my eyes and appeal with the green tint, good stuff. I'll have something up in a minute or two

@misterbigt: For the love of god learn how to map correctly. I don't like seeing tree with a quarter of it missing, and whats with that one just awkwardly in the middle? seriously =/

@Sanoske: It looks so unique with colors never seen anymore, pink and purple, its very nice and different, cool to be away from the rm2k/3 scene, good shit.

rpgs don't have deep storylines or character development though

Thanks for the saturday night laugh, very entertaining statement indeed.

@ Ax_Dude: You wouldn't believe how freaking hard it was to find a crosswalk with that angle!

@ Marcus: Cancelled, are you serious!? Of course the animation will take longer, how difficult is it to move a sprite across the screen? Consider 'Knytt Stories', there's so much art in the backgrounds and music, and all the tiny pixel-animations that went in to it yet the coding resembles a simple platformer. Honestly I'm addicted to that game - Blocky terrain, beautiful backgrounds and soothing ambient music.. way better than any code-filled CBS!

@ Sanosuke: Reminds me of older RTS graphics, like KKND or Crusader (not rts). Actually I can't really place the style but I love it!

@ IceManual5580: That is the mystical tree of knowledge. Resting alone, it is very ominous and foreboding. A lone gatekeeper stands in attendance, preserving against those whom wish to nibble at its enigmatic commodities.

I think the perspective of one building clashes with the other. Other than that it looks nice :)

The sprites are 'kinda' custom. :)

They're actually Jump Ultimate Stars sprites that were used as templates and re-done. The sword-guy (Kane) is Hitsugaya Toshiro and the girl with the gun (Millie) is Nico Robin. And yeah, GameMaker 7.

You must've not been around in 2004-2005.  What happened to all of the original gamesters?  Guess GW has undergone a new generation of designers.
Its all good... you will see...

Anaryu - Looks great, keep at it.

I know how to map correcttely. Play more Bedtime Story games noob.  :shh:

Anyway, small graphical tests for Angelissa's Quest, since it's been so long to topic without any new screens.

testing sprite

playing the flute is like 8 frames.  pulling out the flute is another 8 it will take me longer to animate than it will to actually program the game >

CANCELED

Holy fuck I just saw the old one in comparison to this, great job man!

You learn to map to map correctly noob :shh:

Also in the second pic, I think the room is too big for the scarce stuff that there is in the room. You should either fill it with stuff or make the room smaller.
