Yeah most people give up on trying to make their own game look/feel unique. I think NB is right about the case by case bases that should be applied. RPG games are almost always terrible. I have yet to play an ALL AROUND GREAT rpg game in the commercial/indie scene for years. Yeah I played some average games but I'm talking about a game that left lasting impressions. I first thought I grew out of the whole genre, which i probably did. But I also still think that it's just because there aren't many people trying anymore (or at least lacking the talent).
I think NB was wrong about this applying to any genre. Rpg games are really really bad now a days more so then a LOT of genres. I can easily get into even crappy FPS, SHMUPs, or strategy games if the foundation is good. I don't play rpg games for gameplay alone, I'm usually looking for an enthralling story that FEATURES good gameplay, graphics, music, etc. All the eye candy will only keep me entertained for only a short way into the game.
I didn't even want to post this but I did. About stealing people's graphics, it's pretty bad no matter how you look at it. Just ask, it wouldn't hurt anyone if you did. In my old days I had sent out over 100 PMs asking people for help, and some of them responded

. I don't ask anymore because I don't need anyone.
I think it's also stupid that people automatically assume things are ripped. Konix is dead on about when people ask "Hey is that original, if not give me it!". I typically just ignore people asking me personally as everything I touch is a coupled with rips, original, editted stuff.
