Really amazing stuff as always, andyw. It's a shame they're abandoned. They're all really thought provoking, despite being little demos.

Similar graphical style =/= fangame. Other than graphics there is no relation to the Mother series except for maybe quirkiness.

I guess he was saying the graphical style is similar to the newer Pokémon games, but I don't really know them since I only played Gold extensively.

you can't make custom graphics similar to an already existing game (earthbound) and expect people to not make connections to it. If' I;m being real with you, yeah its a cool simple style but I'm getting tired of people using it as an excuse to have custom graphics without a lot of effort. It's bascially very simple lineart with colors, and very very minimal shading.

I think the menu looks convoluted. You're using bright colors with stuff sticking out everywhere on the edges of the book, so your eye is  drawn to that instead of what is actually in the book, which should be the main focus. Also why is the BG for battles a green gradient?

The menu looks fine ingame at a larger resolution and the green gradient is a placeholder since we haven't decided what we are doing for that yet.
And I disagree about it being an excuse to have simple custom graphics.
How are you getting tired of it? I've hardly seen any games use it, except for the Mother series and Gongo's game, and I'm pretty certain I've been posting screens of this project longer than he has of his (and the fact that his are Theodore edits while ours are drawn from scratch). Seriously like 75% of the games around here use SNES rips or REFMAP or some combination of that. We put a lot of effort into our graphics and constantly go back to fix little things and make things look cohesive. The style fits perfectly with the tone we want for the game.
Sure, the graphics are simple, but who ever said simplicity is a bad thing?

These graphics are simpler than ours, but would you say they're an excuse to quickly produce graphics? Some artist worked long and hard on these pixels back in the day. We don't have LIGHTING EFFECTS or crazy fancy shading schemes or whatever, but that doesn't mean our art is easy to do: the art actually takes us quite a bit of time. In fact, the simplicity is challenging for us. Keeping things clean and consistent while avoiding convoluted art with too many colours is not something we have all worked with before.
The style is cartoony because we want it that way. Not because of "custom graphics, lol."

Sort of, I haven't even touch the battle system yet (There are only two working skills, those being attack and sight see) anyway here's a shitty preview

Speaking about battle system anyone know how i can get rid of the "Row" command all together,
not just in the menu but in the battle command window as well?

not saying simple is bad just saying ppl tend to default to cavestory for platformers and e-bound for RPGs. You can be simple AND original. Look at Doppleganger's Eckle and Toast. Other people who used the style was marcus in the homebound game and other people in rmn posting their first custom chips, can't think right off the dome who they were. When people do custom graphs, they seem to gravitate towards this style, maybe it's a good place to start, but I'd like to see something more original/enticing.

HomeLAND (not homebound) died years ago and I think Eckle and Toast had a somewhat different style although it's ages since I played it. The person you saw posting chips at RMN was most likely Lennon who drew the chips for Chromatose (along with YDS.) In fact, there's a good chance the chips you saw were FROM Chromatose. I just checked it and the only chips I see in that topic of this style are his. (And that's the only RMN thread that allows such sort of "screenshots.")

Origin is not the Mother style but I guess it's similar. I know CAHRULL (the guy who drew Homeland) had a few other mystery projects with the same style too. So that's like a 4 or so projects compared to like... 4000 games with CT or FF6 or Rudra rips, or REFMAP.

Origin vs. Chromatose:




Origin does not even look like the Mother style we have been influenced by. Notice Origin's lack of solid black outlines. In fact, Origin looks very similar to RTP, as if it were drawn over some RTP things, especially the charset style.

edit: Seriously Azn how can you not assume people are going to make the comparison? I am not saying it's a bad style to use but the char styles are pretty much identical and the detail is emphasized in pretty much all the same places. It looks as much like Mother 2 as Mother 3 did (a compliment and also a point in my argument).

edit2: I even think it looks really good but seriously how could you assume I thought it was a pokemon fan game? Come on man use your brain

@Gongo: I like the font, color, and idea, but if I weren't for that fact I knew what was your game called before seeing the title, it would be hard to make it out. Unless the animation going to put the words/letters in a linear fashion, go for a more easier reading.
