At first I kind of agreed with Bandito, but then I remembered times I'd walked through the woods after sundown and barely been able to see anything in front of me. Keep it; the reduced visibility brings home to the player just how dark it is outside - well after dusk but well before dawn- and in a way levels the playing field, as the player can't see much more than the character could in that situation! I like it!

I'm undecided on whether or not this particular screenshot is too dark, but I have to disagree with this statement right here.  Sure there can be added atmosphere with doing this, but sometimes it can also be a big pain in the ass.  For example, I stopped playing MSG3 when I got in that dark cave, because frankly it was annoying to not be able to see anything.  I also hated when it got dark in Harvest Moon games because it would sometimes be hard to see your way back home (until you memorized the map).  You also have to consider that, especially with a PC game, people will be playing the game at different brightness levels (even more so on laptops in order to save batteries), so even if it's just dark enough for you, it could be impossible to play for them.  There's a fine line between atmosphere and playability, and I would always err on the side of playability, because not being able to see well enough to play the game is going to make someone quit.

edit: I looked at your screenshot some more and I think it's fine, even on the lowest brightness setting of my Macbook.  You don't seem to have anything to worry about.  But yeah, as a rule I would never put realism ahead of playability when it comes to something like this.  Just something for people to think about.

Looks fine to me, maybe make it a bit darker?

Regarding screen darkness, keep in mind that some people use CRT monitors that are darker at the brightest setting than LCDs are at their lower settings. Back when I still had a CRT, a lot of people were posting screenshots of horror games that looked like big black rectangles with brown lens flares in the center. It's probably best to err on the side of brighter colors since people with CRTs more than likely have very old computers, and are consequentially more likely to be playing low-resolution rpgmaker games.

This is lookin pretty good, aside from the non-euclidean thatched roof

I hate to be one of those guys who nitpicks every bullshit minor detail, but the dark tree trunks contrast too much with everything else and I would brighten them a little bit. Also, the singular trees in the middle look flat and need a light source. The grass is really, really nice though! I actually zoomed in with MSPaint and was surprised that you only used 3 colors, because it looks deeper than that.

Wow, I really appreciate the tips/feedback. I'll see what I can do about that. ^^

Also, kind of a dumb question.. But by giving the single tree's a light source, do you mean give them shadows or something like that?

rather than compromising your 'atmosphere' for people with shitty monitors, most commercial games have options to compensate for this (gamma, brightness, etc). there's no reason one couldn't do something like that in an rpg maker game if they had a lot of dark areas. just sayin'.

Here is an early tech demo for the battle system I posted a screenshot for earlier.

It's not complete, but will at least show how the battle will flow. It was inspired by Valkyrie Profile.

Looks sharp. Is the dialog box from Persona? I like the background a lot, too.

@AgentAshRiot: I love that battle video you made and hope you don't give up and make a demo or something. But for the love of god don't use that music in the battles please.

Wait- if they met the slime underground, why does the battle area show trees? Anyway, I like that music- it's fun, though I'm guessing, Bandito, that you want him to use "Epic" music or something.  If not in battle, use the tune somewhere else, Ash- say in a puzzle.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I'm currently working on the first part of the game, adding new abilities and such. As far as the music goes, the idea is that whoever is leading the party determines the current battle music (excluding boss fights). If you don't like the music, you can swap your party leader. But if enough people hate it, I might change it, but I think it's fun :D (It's from Live A Live for anyone wondering)

Yeah, I should have edited that part out, but it's just a set-up room at the beginning there, and I hit fraps just as it was loading into the battle -- a moment too soon. But it's not an actual zone yet, just a testing area. I'm glad you like the music though. I have a friend who didn't like it at first, but he realized he just didn't like the intro part. Once the full song came in, he liked it. Some other characters use a more serious and "epic" battle tune, though the whole game will be relatively light-hearted anyway (like Final Fantasy IX or something.)

Not really, I just don't like that tune LOL.

Anyways that idea is really good idea agentashriot.
