Aren't we supposed to be accountable for those we vote into power and accountable for removing them when we think they are doing a bad job?

Yeah, it's not like people could get elected on a false platform or CHANGE while in power, and you yourself said that it would be hard for them to remove these people from power at this pont.  Now, how exactly do you propose they fix this problem if they're accountable for it?  Should they see to it that human beings never change or lie?  Should they run at soldiers with guns?

The problem is that everything you have been talking about is pure theory (horribly wrong and shaky theory at that).  NOTHING you have said is practical in any dang way.  Let me know when you have a solution for this problem because I'm sure the Israelis and the Palestinians would be more than happy to hear you.

But, yeah, if you vote in inane leadership then you deserve the consequences of doing so. The Western world is suffering the consequence of recession for voting in incompetent leadership, Gaza is suffering the consequences of military aggression for voting in terrorists.

There is already the point that politicians can run on a false platform.

Also you are forgetting that in places like this, elections are often phony!

Obviously not, but I was speaking of the body politic. I wasn't speaking of any individual.
What you are doing is taking the abstract idea of "all Palestinian people" and then using that idea to apply all sorts of causalities to individuals.  You say that "all Palestinians" are accountable for their leadership, but that notion doesn't actually hold any real meaning.  People are being killed, and you say it is a logical result of them having made bad decisions.  Even if we ignore the fact that people are stupid and can be strongly influenced to vote against their best interests (see: America in 2000 and 2004), what you can't ignore is the fact that individuals are not necessarily prototypes for their group.

Those Palestinian kids that got shot, did they vote for Hamas?  Did Hamas get 100% of the votes or is it possible that some of the people who were killed did not vote for them?  Did the people who voted for Hamas even know what they were doing and did they agree with their use of the military?  Did they know that Israel would eventually come blowing down houses and shooting white phosphorus bombs into school yards?

For someone who has a quote by a philosopher in his signature, especially someone like Hume who was very sceptical about exactly these assumptions, your reasoning is conspicuously absent.

But, yeah, if you vote in inane leadership then you deserve the consequences of doing so. The Western world is suffering the consequence of recession for voting in incompetent leadership, Gaza is suffering the consequences of military aggression for voting in terrorists.
I didn't vote for Bush.  I didn't even have any say in that.  My country and continent both support strict market regulations, but we still got hit by the economic turndown.  So much for causality.

You dream up links between cause and effect where none exist, and you take this to an extreme by suggesting that Israel is just "doing what's logical".  And to try and strengthen your argument you tell us you don't care one bit about the people that are currently dying in overcrowded hospitals, because it's all their own fault they're dying of gangrene and sepsis anyway.

And that's why people are calling you stupid.

It's exactly those people who the Hamas leaders should be thinking about when they're provoking airstrikes and infantry attacks. Instead of hiding in exile they should be seeking a solution that isn't going to get their people blown into oblivion. Any suffering exacted on the people of Gaza is the fault of those leaders, but I guess that is what happens when you vote terrorists into power isn't it?

So, did the Gazan people have it coming? In a harsh way, yes.

It's entirely possible to be an intelligent person without the need for compassion or emotion. Maybe immoral would be a better word to use?

Really? David Hume was one of the most respected philosophers of his era. But I guess you didn't know that...

The original quote came from a Greek philosopher, I think, but it was brought back into common thought by Hume during the enlightenment.

Quote
In addition to its military wing, the so-called Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigade, Hamas devotes much of its estimated $70-million annual budget to an extensive social services network. Indeed, the extensive social and political work done by Hamas - and its reputation among Palestinians as averse to corruption - partly explain its defeat of the Fatah old guard in the 2006 legislative vote. Hamas funds schools, orphanages, mosques, healthcare clinics, soup kitchens, and sports leagues. "Approximately 90 percent of its work is in social, welfare, cultural, and educational activities," writes the Israeli scholar Reuven Paz. The Palestinian Authority often fails to provide such services, and Hamas's efforts in this area—as well as a reputation for honesty, in contrast to the many Fatah officials accused of corruption—help to explain the broad popularity it summoned to defeat Fatah in the PA's recent elections.
