oh, make sure you go student dorms the first year, then go into student housing. it's a lot cheaper and better.

The very very best advice I could give you would be to do normal computer science not fucking game maker course if you want to get anywhere in the industry. All those courses basically have a shared first year at most universities though so you can think about that later

So true. Study in what you are good at. CS, drawing, music, whatever. The gaming industry cover a lot of jobs and trades. You won't become lead designer right off the uni. Do something you're good at and slowly work your way up. Try to make contact with teachers that can get you in the industry.

YOU DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT COLLEGE DO YA

also bring fucking shower shoes because either you will have a public shower (horrible and gross) or a room shower which you are still sharing with someone and with EVERY PERSON WHO HAS LIVED THERE BEFORE YOU so also horrible and gross.

edit: oh i assumed you were going to live in the dorms. if you are getting your own place this is less of an issue i guess.

Once you do become an alcoholic you might want to take time to consider where the RA's in your dorm can and can't search during inspection week so you have a place to stash your empty pints, bags of weed, and/or hypodermic needles and firearms (the closet, for instance).

you had INSPECTION WEEKS? whoa. that sounds awful. we had those at w. village but those were apartments not dorms and they did one a semester and it was one day and it was just to check for fire hazards.

steve had every single fire hazard violation because of how messy he was it was hilarious.

Yeah dude we couldn't have toasters, microwaves, kitchen knives or candles and you couldn't have real food unless it was in a mini-fridge.  Also during my second year my dorm buddy moved out and the RA people told me I couldn't have any of my possessions on his half of the room unless I paid double the residence cost.  So yeah, a couple of weeks out of that semester I actually had to move all of my shit to one side of the room!

They also could write you up if the individual RA inspecting your room deemed that it was TOO MESSY.

we had university provided microwaves and while you couldn't have shit on the bed unless you bought it out, i never heard the SIDE restriction.

messiness is a thing across the board as it is a firehazard if you trip and fall.

whoa that sounds crazy. we have 2-3 room inspections a semester but they basically walk briefly through your room and check that you do not have a six foot tall beeramid. once they actually had a deal where they would skip your room if you left out two cans of food.

lol room inspections

my dorm setup is kinda weird, there is like a big common room with couches and then that opens into a little nexus that has 5 doors. 4 for the computer rooms which have another door inside leading to the beds and then one of the doors leads to a bathroom with 2 showers and 3 toilets and like 5 sinks. its pretty nice actually I just hate having three roommates. the RAs never make it all the way back to my actual room, they mostly just come in the couch/tv room

cheap booze, infinite pens, lots of noodles etc

What's it like?
best fun ever, if you pick a course you like and wind up with good people it ends up being more like chillin with friends and having fun than real work.

What's the Games Development Course like?
Full of nerds. Go for a general computing course as well, most of those seem to have a large part based on games design. But don't expect there to be many females. I know a bro whose doing one of them courses and it's a total sausage fest, the closest thing to wank material is a polak with long hair.

Quote
What problems should I expect?
lots of problems with timings, late nights and panicing when everything goes wrong the day before the deadline.

blahblahblah

some pointers...

-Don't do drugs outside yuor dorm or near campus, do it in town or whatever. My uni has a three strikes rule and I know some people that're already on their second so I could easily guess some have already been kicked out.
-Make friends with people from different courses. Conversations are less insular and also they can help you/you can help them.
-You're british? try making friends with a local plastic plod or two, for obvious reasons.
-Try to make friends with people doing different courses, you can help each other out, and it can make better conversation.
-Don't date anybody in your dorm, shouldn't be a prolem since you think games console is a priority, but it's pretty bad. When things go sour(and they will since most uni romances are based around shots of vodka in the su bar) it pisses everybody off, arguements accross the halls and whatnot, and other people living there will just get pissed off with you.

Basically you will start drinking and you'll likely do a bit of drugs, even if you say you don't now. And regardless you really should! Uni is an experience and if you're just gunna sit around and do nothing but post on animeforums when you're resting then you're wasting the opportunity. It's character building and your experiences define who you are.

People in the UK need to pay in order to licence their TV? Weird. First time I've ever heard of this barbaric practice.

As to university life, I don't really have much to say as I don't live on campus and I'm not a socialite at all so pretty much all I do is go to school to classes, study, and write tests. My program is structured like high school so it's easy in that I don't need to plan ahead for choosing courses - I'm locked in to what I need to take until I graduate.

Good luck!

How do you think they afford their high quality BBC programming?

Clothing brands! You're an university student. You're supposed to be too poor to buy branded clothing.

Don't listen to this. You should wear Polo and Lacoste exclusively.

dude, why is everyone saying to go to dorms?? i'm not sure if you have the option to go for suites in the UK or whatever, but here we do and i can't possibly see why anyone would want the dorm instead.

basically the suite is like an on-campus apartment style res where you're roomed with 2-3 other people, you each get a room, a kitchen, a bathroom and everything. so you basically learn to cook/clean and you have ROOM and you actually feel like you're 19 and not 15. a dorm basically sucks because you're treated like a baby, are expected to participate in some really lame events (i guess this depends on the uni), have to eat CAFE food everyday (which is absolutely horrid here and everyone complains), and yeah. everyone always talks about how the dorms are needed for first year experience or whatever, but i find that to be completely bullshit because i live in a suite and i still visit the dorms often and can MAKE FRIENDS/HAVE SEX/LIVE DA LIFE and a lot of people complain about how shitty dorms are.

if you have the choice, i'd go for apartment style. but with what you described yourself as, i'm not sure that you'd be able to SURVIVE socially if you're asking WHAT BRANDS OF CLOTHING SHOULD I WEAR I WANT TO BE COOL, come on, you're coming out of high school!

dorms are a lot cheaper than apartments especially for freshmen who might not be close to the area and thus unable to get apartments. also an apartment tends to isolate you from the community in college and while that's okay in your later years when you've got your own friends, for a freshman it can get pretty lonely and boring. you may have wandered into the dorms a few times but you might have also had friends in the university already or access to transportation most people do.

do you really not understand DORMS.

I wish I'd have chosen dorms when I signed up as everybody there are generally having a blast, it's so gay being so far away from the action.

Look. I won't be doing drugs or booze. Britain is alot different than America (America still sounds cooler).
