You can't just print money and the food "wasted" on prisoners is negligible.  You could say "for every prisoner fed that's a child starving" but in reality that food or medicine would have never gone to the starving child in the first place.

Just to clear up (and so I can add to the first post), I couldn't find this- did anyone know their reason for the tainted milk? Was it an accident or not? I've heard people say it was and people say it wasn't.

They were aware of what they were doing and did it for the explicit purpose of increasing revenue. Melamine doesn't accidentally appear in milk at high levels like this and after the whole petfood scandal, the effect of melamine in food products wasn't a mystery to these people. Perhaps they were not aware of just how much they were putting in there, but it had to have been a conscious descision to start putting it in there in the first place.

Good riddance to these people. I'm not the biggest fan of the chinese government or the death penalty but when it comes to knowingly lacing baby formula with poison to make more money then someone needs to go. This is like badguy villian shit.

But look man, I sort of agree with you on the capital punishment part. Except, like it was said before, you really can't compare this to an actual murder. I don't know if there's a history of melamine causing death, but I'm pretty sure there isn't, and if there isn't, then these people were just being greedy and reckless, not like they meant to kill 6 babies and poison close to 300,000. But that's still pretty horrible and they should get life in prison for that.

The hazardous health effects of melamine cyanurate was pretty well established when there was a big scandal over it causing kidney failure and death in housepets when contaminated gluten from china was found to be the cause.

There's no way they could have been unaware of this.
